Office Hours [7.8]

Anyone passing by Ghanima's office might hear a rhythmic clicking, the dulled 'thud' of chess pieces moving at rapid speeds as she played against the various tau awarenesses in her mind.

She was in her office today, rather than Friday, because she had a vague sense that her mun is on an airplane that day that it would be best to get her lesson ( Read more... )

Of course, Mohiam was probably easier to beat than her brother. Leto knew that sound, and smiled as he approached Ghanima's office. Without any explanation he sat down opposite her and reached out for one of the pieces.

[short and SP-ish thread from me, hope that's ok.]

That earned him a lazy swat at his hand, and Ghanima laughed.

"I like winning," she informed Leto smugly as she took up a counter-attack against him. "You'll need to do better than that."

[Always!]

"Don't feel too safe," Leto replied, shooting her a mischievous look. "Perhaps the success of the trip to Arrakis fed your ego too much," he teased.

"And perhaps being coddled as a student has dulled your edge," she taunted sweetly.

It'd been one heck of a week. After dreamwalking, arguing with Merlin, finding out about George, and then last night's dream and this morning's conversation with Tony still to be played out, Dinah kinda desperately needed advice. Or at least another perspective. Or maybe just tea. Tea would be nice.

She stopped at the door, and peeked inside. "Professor Atreides? You busy?" Dinah shoved her hands in her pockets, and rocked on her heels, eyes still showing signs of not sleeping much.

"Come in, Dinah," Ghanima said, looking up from her game and twirling one of the pieces between her fingers. One glance was all she needed to ascertain her student's sleep-deprived state, and she was off the floor, moving to start the tea.

Somewhere in her head, Mohiam was mocking her.

"What can I do for you this morning?"

"Um. Well." Dinah wandered over to sit down, and curled up in the chair with her legs under her, head tilting sideways as she watched Ghanima starting the tea. "The tea would be nice. And someone to talk to. It's been a really weird week in a lot of ways. I didn't sleep much last night, I had another one of those dreams."

"What type of 'those dreams?'" Ghanima asked. "Stress-induced dreams, nightmares, or something more?"

Unaware that Leto had already made her case, and badly at that, Karla knocked in the door, rehearsing in her head what she wanted to say. She'd explain that she had no actual desire to test the Spice, that she was simply interested in learning the mechanism by which the water was created, and then explain what a Black Widow was and that the Lady Irulan had said that her caste shared many similarities with the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. And then she'd explain she wasn't an idiot and that years of training around posions had taught her a healthy respect for them and reiterate that she had no interest in trying Spice, since she didn't want to even imagine was a foreign poison could do to her body. And her eyes were blue enough already, thank you.

Well, she probably wasn't going to add that last bit, but other than that, it sounded pretty good. Inhaling, she knocked on the door. "Lady Ghanima, may I have a word with you?"

Ghanima looked up from the pile of papers she'd been sorting through. "Miss Karla," she replied. "Come to raid my stash of herbs again?"

Karla grinned a bit. "Not today, Lady Ghanima. Though I just came back from a trip home and have some plants and herbs of my own if you'd ever like to see them."

She entered a little hesitantly and sat down in front of the desk, reminding herself she'd prepared for this. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything," she said, eyeing the chess set. "I can always come back."

"If I were truly busy, I would have stayed home where interruptions are few and far between," Ghanima laughed. "One of the benefits to taking up residence at the local hotel, is that I do not have roommates to pester me when I am trying to work."
