Nightmares Win

Chapter 05

Johnny woke abruptly, sitting up sharply, and he quickly looked around the dark room, for a moment forgetting where he was. He listened intently, but all was silent, and he threw a look around for a clock. There was an alarm clock on the bureau on Matt's side, and it read four thirty; Johnny usually woke at five on week days -- that meant he should be leaving soon. He looked down at Matt, who was on his side, facing the other way. His body moved with every breath he took, and Johnny found himself unable to look away.

Realizing he needed to get a move on, he climbed out of the bed, and searched for his clothes, ignoring the pain from the night before. He got his pants and shoes on with no trouble, but he accidentally put on Matt's shirt instead, and had to find his own. Once he got it right, he walked to Matt's sleeping form, and bent slightly. He tapped Matt's shoulder, and said the older man's name softly. Matt stirred, taking a deep breath, but he didn't open his eyes, and rolled over away from Johnny. The kid rolled his eyes, and he tapped the older man again, this time a little more forcefully.

"Matt -- I have to go." he said.

No response at first, but then Matt quickly rolled onto his back, snapping to life.

"Let me walk you." he said, voice full of grog as he started to sit up.

Johnny grinned to himself, but lightly pushed the older man back down. "No," he said. "It's alright, I just didn't want to leave without saying anything."

Matt nodded, looking inwardly relieved that he didn't have to get out of the bed. He grabbed the front of Johnny's shirt roughly, and pulled him down for a deep kiss.

"Be careful." he said, words slurred as he was already falling back asleep.

Johnny nodded, but was unsure if Matt saw, and he turned, going to the door. He left quickly, moving stealthily down the hall and stairs. He got outside and started quickly in the direction of his apartment. He knew something was wrong by the way the hair on the back of his neck stood, and he glanced over his shoulder, feeling as if someone was following him. Of course, he saw nothing. He quickened his pace, and tried to ignore the feelings he was getting.

He started to pass an alleyway, but caught movement, and he stopped, turning to meet a pair of yellowy eyes -- they all had the same eyes when they transformed. He froze, trying not to point out to himself that there was maybe only eleven feet separating him from the werewolf. He took a deep slow breath, and felt his heart stop as a low growl stirred from the lycanthrope's throat. It took a step towards him, its large paw making a dull sound on the pavement, and Johnny made the mistake of stepping backwards. The wolf lunged at him, but an arm suddenly snaked around his waist, and yanked him harshly away. Three gunshots echoed down the alley, followed by a whine, and the creature landed heavily about a foot away from Johnny and whoever was holding him.

He slid out of the grasp, and turned to find a very tired looking Marta. He'd only met her one time, but they both remembered each other.

"Thanks." he said quietly, hoping she wasn't able to hear the thuds his heart made against his chest.

She nodded, but threw a look around as she shoved her revolver into the waistband of her jeans.

"Come on," she said, grabbing his arm. "Before someone finds the body."

Johnny snuck a quick glance at the lifeless wolf; three bullet holes were steaming in it's barrel chest, as the silver melted away skin like acid. Marta still held onto his arm, even when they were a good block away from the alley, and Johnny's brow furrowed as they passed his apartment building.

"Um," he satarted. "I need to --"

"Talk to Brandan."

"Marta told me that as she was finishing up her patrol, she saw you leaving Blood Lust."

Johnny shifted, glad that Brandan had his back to him. They were both in the older man's bedroom, Marta had just went off to bed. Johnny assumed that the club Matt owned was called Blood Lust, but he played like he didn't know what Brandan was talking about.

"What the Hell's Blood Lust?" he asked.

Brandan turned to him. "Why don't you tell me?" he asked.

Johnny studied the hunter for a moment, before giving a shrug.

"I honestly, have no clue what you're going at." he replied.

Brandan's dark eyes burned into Johnny's, and the kid fought hard to keep eye contact. But then Brandan smiled, taking a step towards Johnny.

"I'd been hoping she was wrong." he said. "She had me scared for a moment."

Johnny didn't know what to say, so he didn't speak at all. Brandan had now made it directly in front of him and was still smiling.

"Sorry for the mix-up, doll." he said. "Can't blame us."

"I guess not." Johnny said unsurely -- he thought Brandan's exhaustion was getting to him.

"When can we start your training?" the older man asked randomly.

Johnny mentally cursed. He'd completely forgotten about Brandan wanting to train him early, and he first thought of Matt -- making him hesitate.

"I don't know." he answered slowly.

"Well, are you free tonight?" Brandan asked.

Johnny nodded before he could stop himself, and Brandan grinned.

"Great." the older man said, "I'll swing by your place at seven then."

Johnny nodded and Brandan smirked again, before leaning down and pressing his lips to the corner of the boy's mouth. Johnny froze, eyes widening as his stomach flipped over. What was he getting himself into?

"I don't like it, you trusting him like that."

Matt brought his glass up to his lips, and Brian watched as he took a drink, a silence falling over the empty bar.

"Why not?" Matt finally asked.

"He's friends with that hunter." Brian said. "You need to ask why?"

Matt shook his head. "Look, I like this kid -- I'm sure I can keep him on our side." he said.

"Why do you like him anyway?" Brian asked. "Is he good in bed or something?"

"Yes," Matt said, rolling his eyes. "But that's not the reason. I just feel like we have this unnatural bond -- like I've known him for years."

"Dude, you have -- I can't believe you don't remember." Brian said.

"What are you talking about?" Matt asked skeptically, taking another swig of his drink.

Brian studied the other man to see if he was lying or not. "Man, you killed his parents."

Was it as predictable as I thought it was?
