Old laptop harddrive wanted

I need some computer help! I have an old Compaq Armada m700 laptop and it's been working fine until about 6 months ago when the hard drive crashed. I'm pretty sure it's broken for good. Anyway I want to give this laptop to my mother instead of my crappy old desktop that she is currently using and for this I need a new laptop harddrive ( Read more... )

I don't think you'll be able to find anything good enough in ebay, the hard drive market is not so good.
Your best shot would be looking for a refurbisher in the UK, I found this 30Gb HD for 45 quid, which is not bad at all, you'll be able to find something even cheaper finding for components refurbishers in the UK

I've checked ebay and just as you said, no luck.... It seems abuyer is my best bet at the moment but I really don't need that big a hard drive and I'm a little worried that my old machine won't be able to handle one such a large drive.

Second hand hard drives it is something really really complicated to find around, really.

Well I had a laptop with a 10Gb hard drive and I plugged in a 40Gb one without a problem at all, maybe if you can't find anyone to sell you a hard drive you can try to buy a 20Gb or 30Gb one and call Compaq beforehand to check out with them if it'll work.

Thanks for the tip That's still pretty expensive though and I think getting a new one from ebuyer might be better value for money. I was sort of hoping to get an old used 1-4GB 2,5" HD for around £10 from someone who has upgraded to a larget drive or has an old broken laptop that's not in use.

As I said above it's worth asking on LJ before buying something new.

Thanks!

as a matter of fact laptop hard drives break awfully often, which means there's always demand for new ones and nearly no market for refurbished stuff.
at least no serious market ;-)
that implies also that it might not be as good an idea as you think to equip your mother with an old hard drive (which will break too soon. like yours apparently did...)

i recommend you just buy a cheap and small NEW one with warranty and save some of those important nerves you've got
