Wondering How Things Could Have Been

I'm wrestling with the notions of concept and conception. The thing I dislike about art school is the insistence on inventing meaning behind a work. Why can't a work exist on its own merit? Why can't the viewer be allowed to come to their own conclusions on a piece of art, instead of having the artist's intent shoved down their throat? It's
