I've often wondered if 'The Ruby in the Smoke' and 'The Tiger in the Well' are a bit of a homage to Margery Allingham's 'The Tiger in the Smoke'. Her stuff is good too, though incredibly dated now.

Ooooh, I'd never heard of Allingham's book, it looks interesting. (Granted, the wikipedia article just kind of completely spoiled the ending...)

I'll be fit if I can keep up with things ;) So far I've...carried lots of heavy books around?
