What type of capabilities would you like your laptop to excel in? If you are interested in doing lots of media type functions, I would suggest a mac iBook. Gaming...go with a dell.

I've never even touched a mac before, so I hesitate to make a jump like that. Also, aren't the mac's sort of pricey? Or am I completely wrong there? I guess I could just look around online and see...

Whichever laptop you purchase, if you have enough money left over, be sure to get some type of warranty. This could save you thousands down the road. I used to work at circuit city, and on the laptop, the warranty is priceless. You could basically have your computer struck by lightning on the day before the warranty runs out...(4 years) come back and get a brand new computer that was the same price as yours 4 years ago. Huge upgrade.

I'd shy away from Dells, actually. I've heard a lot of folks having weird shit happen with their dells... stuff like their motherboard randomly fried and things of that nature. I've been real happy with my HP thusfar, and most folks I've spoken to with an HP seemed pretty satisfied. Same goes for the macs, and I would suggest one of those if you are looking into media applications as well. Also, if you find a model you want, make sure to look at the third-party retailers to buy it, chances are you will save a lot of money.

I was thinking HP, too.

Basically, I need to be able to write on it, store & edit photos, and have my music. But I'd sort of like to not go the mac route, just because I tend to be a creature of habit. Is there a particular um, model that you recomend? Or just HP in general?

Them in general. Any of their laptops will do what you want, so it just depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a couple of the Pavilian notebooks for under $1000, but I didn't really look to far in it, so they may get you on customizations and upgrades you'll want to get. Just do your homework and don't be hasty about buying one and you'll end up with what you need at the price you want.
