There's still dust under my fingernails. In the folds of my clothes. The roots of my hair. Under my skin. I go to Nanashi and I always leave feeling like it's clinging to my back. This shadowed weight of my past, looming just behind me. I can't get back to Miranda fast enough. Or maybe I just wanna believe that. Sometimes, the dirt and the vast ( Read more... )

Jobs don't come to him anymore. Once they did, occasionally, when he was better known and times were fatter, but things have gone downhill in a number of ways and now he has to hunt for his food. He's heard a whisper here, gotten a lead there, and he's out and looking for a Mr. Abbas Saito. Unpleasant. Dangerous. But apparently he can use a few good men.

His mind is on Florence and the work she needs done on her, on the price of fuel, on the number of drinks he's had tonight (maybe too many for work like this), and the rain has his head down, and so he doesn't notice Neil until he's practically run him over.

He opens his mouth to apologize and then his face splits into a grin when he sees who it is. "Small fucking planet," he says. "Where the hell have you been?" Because he'd headed over to where Persephone was docked a couple of days before and found a strange ship in her place.

We always end up finding each other. I dunno how it works, in the whole fucking universe, I blink my eyes and there he is. Maybe every time it's a relief, whether I'll admit it or not, but just about nothing surprises me anymore.

"Had a couple jobs on Nanashi. Decided to stay a while," I say, smirking just to stop myself from returning his grin, "Why, you miss me?"

"Sure, I was crying my fuckin' eyes out." He rolls his eyes and keeps walking, figuring Neil will follow. Knowing it, pretty much. He's not flattering himself, it's just how things seem to work. "Literally, one of 'em."

Nanashi. That dustball. Only for Neil that dustball is home. "Been a while since I been there," he says. "Anything interesting?"

"'Course you were," I say, changing direction to follow him. It's not like I had anywhere better to be.

"Same old shit." It was quiet and depressingly familiar. "I took Logan with me. All he wanted to do was stay in the fuckin' shuttle."
