Summary: HOLY CRAP ACTIVITY. Mai is rushing to the game shop in the rain, arrives soaked, and changes into her work uniform, only to get soaked to the bones again after Otogi asks her to lunch. The two get to know each other a little better, and things soon lead to getting to know each other alot better. And Mai feels it's time to move on. ;_;
Kujaku Mai rushed through the rain with a newspaper over her head, as though it would prevent any chances of getting more wet than she already was. She was on her way to work when the sky just decided to fall, and now her efforts of looking nice were completely ruined. And she was even wearing a white blouse. ...Peachy. When the building was in sight, she ran inside, dripping all over the place as she rushed to clock in. "God damnit," she cursed, knowing she'll have to make herself mop now too.
"Why is it when I'm doing something important, this stuff happens?" Otogi hit his head against the computer desk and walked outside into the main part of the shop. "I thought I heard the door open... since when did it start raining?" He surveyed Mai's clothes and ran back to one of the other rooms, tossing her a pair of clothes. "Sorry,it's my fault for making you rush; I forgot to tell you what time to come in today!"
Mai caught the clothes in the air, walking to the cashier table and setting up. "Don't worry about a thing, Otogi-san~" she said cheerfully now that she had a change for clothes. "And I have no idea, it just started raining on my way over here. Just my luck though. Thanks for the clothes, anyway." Smiling, she walked past Otogi, giving him a small peck of a kiss on the cheek to show she was grateful. "I just hope the power doesn't go out. That would... suck violently," she said frowning. "Well I'm going to change now~" She headed to the bathroom quickly after that, giving her friend a small wave.
Otogi nodded, fixing all the displays, adding new items to them before the customers came in. It was another few hours before the store opened, but he liked to tidy up before a stampede of feet paraded in on the checkerboard floor. He stepped back into his office for a bit, waiting for Mai to come out of the bathroom. "I will never understand how long it takes for women to change," he said, shaking his head as he put on his own uniform.
Mai hummed a small tune to herself as she dressed as quickly as she could. Which only took quite as long because she had other garments to dry. She stepped out of the stall she had changed in, and redid her make-up before heading back into the store. "Were you waiting long?" She asked, squeezing the last bit of water from her hair.
"No,not really," he lied. If there was one bad quality about Ryuuji Otogi it was his impatience. He couldn't wait for SHIT. "It's fine anyway, the store doesn't open for a few hours." He walked into the store and leaned against the counter across from Mai. "Which reminds me. Since it's not time to open yet, wanna go grab some lunch?"
Mai glanced outside at the pouring rain and back to Otogi. Her eyebrow lifted as she smirked. "Sure, why not? You got your pimp mobile car, right?" She winked. "I am hungry too..."
"Yeah,it's out back." He gave a hand gesture, signalling her to follow him. "If you'll just wait a sec,I'll make sure to close the shop before we leave." And he did just that, locking all the doors and turning all the lights off. They got outside where it was still raining, and he unlocked the car as soon as he could so neither of them'd get wet.
Mai quickly got inside the vehicle, shivering a bit from the rain. "So what kind of food did you have in mind?" She asked, glancing over at the other as soon as he was inside as well. "And if you say fast food I'll punch you in the face go on strike~" Smile.
He put his hand against the back of her headrest so he could back out. "I'm not sure, but I'm with you on the whole no-fast-food thing," he cringed.
Mai laughed a bit, putting her hands in her lap. "Well what's around this area? Chinese, Mexican, Italian..." And she knew just the Italian place she was referring to. She passed it every time on her way over. Roberto's. ...But their food wasn't all that bad. And she WAS in the mood for Italian. Just because someone USED to work there shouldn't have and effect on her at all.
"Hmm... they all sound tempting," he said, not having eaten out in a while. "How about you pick? I usually eat at home anyway,so I wouldn't know." He looked over at her but turned back to the road a second after.
Mai smiled softly. Otogi could be such a nice guy. "How about Italian? I'm in the mood for some manicotti." She glanced outside at the pouring rain. It looked like it was night at how hard it was coming down.
"Fine with me," he smiled, driving ahead. "So how come I never see you at school? We're in the same grade and everything..." He was always horrible at ice-breakers.
Mai looked back at him again. "Oh I know, right? Our classes must be on the opposite side of the building, or something. I don't even see you at lunch." She then perked up. "We should eat lunch at school together."
"Sure, that'd be great." He pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant and turned off the car engine. "Shall we go inside?" He got out of the car and opened the door for Mai.
Mai stepped out with a grin on her face. "Such a gentlemen," she noted, following him into the restaurant. "Have you ever eaten at Roberto's, Otogi-san?"
"Can't say that I have," he said, using the remote to lock his car as they went inside. "It looks like a nice place, though."
"Oh, the food is delicious~" And nothing about it let Mai down or made her remember certain times at all. As soon as they were seated, Mai took her chance to get to know Otogi a little better. "So, besides being in charge of a major corporation and all, what do you do for fun?"
He smiled at the waitress as she walked off and pulled a menu from the holder. "Well," he laughed, trying not to sound too stupid. "I like to play card games in my spare time,as dorky as that sounds." He made sure to pull the menu over his face to cover his red cheeks. That's all he needed was to be embarrassed in front of a pretty girl.
Mai hid her giggles behind a large grin. She had never really seen Otogi blush like that, and it honestly amused her to no end. "Aw, I can't be the only friend that you like to invite to lunch," she answered, leaning over the table a bit to look closer at her friend.
"Well of course not,but I don't have very many female friends. I have fangirls, but I don't think that counts," he said, removing the menu from his face.
Mai was very surprised by this, looking at Otogi as though he had just eaten something that wasn't supposed to be eaten. "You don't have many friends?" She asked, perplexed. "Now that I have trouble believing..."
He laughed, realizing that he had worded that wrong. "I have some friends, but it's really hard for me to get close to people. I mean sure,at this school I don't have many friends, but that was also before I became a 'celebritiy.' Now it seems people only like me because I have a game franchise." He rolled his eyes, hating how superficial people could be.
Mai frowned, looking Otogi over. "Sounds like you have it rough," she sighed. "Hard is the life of fame~ I hope you aren't too lonely, are you? Well, you won't be now that you've met me."
He laughed, taking a drink of his water as the waitress skipped off with their orders. "Yeah,I guess it's kinda hard. I'm not lonely, really. Okay, well I guess I am. But if I have one good friend,I'm good, right?" He smiled at her, showing off his perfectly white teeth.
Mai smiled softly, slightly surprised by the warmth she felt on her cheeks. Otogi had a nice smile. Then, she blinked, catching herself in her small moment of admiration. Wait. What did that mean? Mai wasn't exactly in favor of welcoming more confusion in her life. "If that one good friend is me, then of course~" She answered when she found words. When the waitress came by their table, she quickly ordered her manicotti, and waited for Otogi to answer.
"Well... yeah." He smiled again as the waitress brought him his food. "So a pretty girl like you doesn't have any boyfriends? I figured they'd be lining up to date you." He unwrapped his silverware and placed the napkin in his lap.
At first, Mai was taken back by the question, and froze in place. But she soon snapped out of it, trying to cover herself with a small laugh. "Oh! Uh, well--" And this was the first time she had ever stumbled around like an idiot over answering such a question. "Not until recently." She coughed, somewhat trying to smile before quickly taking a sip of her water.
He nodded, not really sure of what to say next. "Wow,this place really is pretty good. I ought to come here more often." He checked his watch inbetween bites making sure they were still going to be able to make it back to the shop on time for it to open.
Mai placed some of her now soaking hair behind her ear. "Yeah, I used to come here alot~" She caught him checking his watch. "How are we on time?"
"We're fine," he said, smiling at her. "We've got another half-hour or so. If we're cutting it too close,I can go ahead and pay." He waved the waiter down and got their check.
"...Oh!" Mai seemed to blink out of a trance. "You don't have to do that - Let me help." That said, she reached for the check in his grasp.
He blinked, taken aback. Usually when he took people out, they were almost grateful for him wanting to pay. Though not like he didn't like it; it was nice having someone else chip in for once. "Oh. Well, thanks." He laid his portion on the table and sat drinking the rest of his water before they left.
"No problem." Mai smirked, despite herself. She had gotten so used to paying for... Jounouchi, she didn't even think twice about grabbing that check. She sighed. Maybe some things won't ever change. "Thanks for taking me here," she said, despite the pounding rain.
"It was no problem at all. I hope I get the privelege to do it again sometime," he said,a smile appearing lopsided on his face. "So are you ready to head back to the shop?"
"I'm ready when you are~" Mai pointed out as she finished her meal. She grabbed her purse and took one more sip of her beverage before looking at Otogi expectantly.
"I say we should leave before the rain gets too bad." He stood up and waited for Mai,holding the door open for her once they reached it.
Mai bowed her head gratefully. "Such the little gentlemen." She smiled, covering her head with her purse as she walked outside. "Come on!" She told him, reaching for his wrist. But she soon learned her heals didn't exactly mix well with wet, slippery concrete, considering after just a few steps she felt herself slip. Unfortunately, she seemed to have forgotten she was still holding on to Otogi.
Otogi tried to keep himself and Mai up,but failed miserably as he felt himself tumble to the ground. He managed to place his hands on the ground before he fell, restraining himself from crushing her from beneath him. Their faces were inches apart and all he could do was stare, not sure of what to do. The longer they stayed like that, though, the redder his face got. Yet he still layed there, immobile.
Mai was... confused. She felt her heart beating hard from the excitement of the fall, but - Otogi looked strangely alluring with his hair drenched to his face like that. The obvious redness covering his face was contributing as well, and Mai couldn't seem to tear her eyes away. Here they were, soaked to their bones and lying down on wet concrete just outside an Italian restaurant... and Mai couldn't move a muscle. Despite her recent broken heart, she could see how Otogi might be quite appealing. Hell, she could see herself very attracted to him right then. And suddenly, she came to a decision. What better way to forget anything that was hurting her, right? Taking advantage of their immobility, Mai lifted her head to close that small distance between them, timidly placing her lips on his at first.
Otogi took a second to register what was happening, and after that second his arms loosened up and he kissed her back. The rain was coming down harder after every second they laid there, but he wasn't going anywhere - not after a while,at least. He STRADDLED HER sat with his legs on either side of her so he could keep his balance as a hand brushed her cheek.
Mai noticed the kiss was... different from what she was used to, but that wasn't enough to make her pull away. Jou said to forget about him and that's what she was doing. Besides, she could feel herself melting into the kiss already as she felt the other's hand on her cheek. Her arms wrapped around Otogi then, pulling him closer.
Otogi shivered, not only because the sudden gust of wind against his back, but at his and Mai's bodies so close together. He wanted to stay like that, but he suddenly remembered they had work. He applied more pressure to her lips and pulled away, slowly taking his hand off her cheek. He sat up and reached a hand out to help her out as he spoke. "We ought to uh... get back to the shop." He was only hoping she couldn't see his red face.
Mai felt the heat on her cheeks rise as well, despite the cold rain. She took his hand, but that only seemed her make her blush worse. "Ah, yes. That's true," she answered, not wanting to look at him, but unable to keep her eyes away. When they got to their feet, Mai still held his hand. "So, does this...?" She hoped he got the general idea of her question's meaning.
He ran with her, leading her to his car on the other side of the restaurant. "Uhm. Well I was kind of hoping you'd say you didn't have a boyfriend." He smiled gently as he held the car door open for her.
Mai smiled, sitting comfortably inside Otogi's car. Otogi was really a cute guy... she could see herself falling for him - even if it was only attraction now. Mai waited for him to get in the driver's seat before speaking again. "I guess I won't be without a boyfriend for long, eh?" She grinned, feeling her confidence come back.
He grinned back at her before pulling out of the parking lot. "Guess not." Maybe Otogi hadn't lost his charm after all.
The End
