Summary: Otogi and Mai are on their way to class when Jou literally runs into Mai. There is much awkwardness and Jou realizes Mai is dating someone new.

Kujaku Mai felt herself smile softly - she even felt a small heat on her cheeks. Her hand felt warm inside Otogi’s as they walked the halls of Domino High to their next class. Her last class had been let out a bit early, and her next - for once - wasn’t too far from her last. She found comfort in idly walking the halls with her… boyfriend?. Life did seem to be looking up - even if it might take some getting used to.

All Otogi Ryuuji could do was grin ear to ear. For once,he was genuinely happy and he felt like a normal person damn those fangirls. The unnerving stares from his classmates were (thankfully) going to be avoided; he and Mai were virtually the only people in the hallway. They reached their destination, and he smiled at her. "So now what?"

Mai was grinning as well as she stopped her walking and looked up at Otogi. “Hm~ How about we wait until the bell rings?” She asked, giving his hand a squeeze. They had some time before the class started anyway.

For the first time in a long while, Jounouchi Katsuya actually cared that he was going to be late for class. Surprising yes, as was the fact he was quite literally running as fast as his legs could carry him.

Luckily, the hallway seemed eerily clear at the moment. Jou didn't think much about that. After all, less traffic for him. He flew down the corridor, and sharply turned at a corner. A flash of something blonde caught his eye as he turned, but not before he could stop himself from colliding with it as he attempted to avoid the closer object; something tall and dark. "Watch out!" was all he could manage to squeak before tripping over his own feet, sending him and this anonymous blonde thing to the ground with him.

Mai barely had a chance to register just what had happened before she felt her hand tear away from Otogi’s and her body tumbling backward. She let out a little yelp before she smacked the ground hard, releasing curses when the growing headache informed her of just how bad she had hit her head. Her vision seemed to be blurring because of this, but it soon cleared for her to be able to see who had just knock her down and was now straddling on top of her. “….” Well she knew him alright. And all she could do was just widen her eyes with a stare - and try to hold back the fast pace her heart was drilling.

Jou, however, had yet to reach the same recognition. As he pushed himself off the girl but still over her, he clutched his forehead in pain as it had it the floor rather hard. "Oh, man, I'm so sorry!" he said, shaking his head slightly with eyes clenched shut. "I should've been looking where I was go-" but he statement couldn't be completely. His eyes had opened and looked down to see Mai -HIS Mai- looking up at him; shocked and confused. His eyes imitated hers, and his heart ceased to pump as he looked down. Warmth pooled in his cheeks, and he stammered after several awkward moments. "….M-Mai?"

Otogi looked from Mai to the other blonde, then back to Mai. "Do you two know eachother? Coz I mean I'd hate to break up the reunion." He furrowed his eyebrow in confusion, his tone of voice coming off a little hostile.

Mai was feeling all the things she thought she had forgotten, yet she still couldn’t seem to pull her eyes away. She heard Otogi’s voice somewhere in there, but she didn’t understand the words. All she could really focus on was the way a few strands of Jounouchi’s hair fell over his temble. “…Jou..” But, as soon as she felt herself speak, reality came back in an instant. She then realized just how red her cheeks a been, and forced her gaze away, facing Otogi. “Oh, yeah, Otogi-san. This is - well, we know each other.” What had she been thinking just then? Hadn’t she gotten over how - well, how Jounouchi made her feel like this? Her body became very conscious of the weight on top of her, and she forced herself not to think about it.

"…." Jounouchi didn't understand a word that came out of her mouth, as his eyes were too focused on hers to pay attention. It all felt natural again, being close to her and all that. It was so familiar and right, but he knew something was off here. After a moment, he snapped back to reality, and frantically pushed himself off Mai as his heart started up again at tremendous speeds. "Oh, man! I-I'm so sorry, Mai!" he stammered, offering a hand to help her up. That WAS the right thing to do right? "Really! I…I didn't mean to…" Break up with you? Give you back that ring? Lie to you? "Run into you like that." You're hopeless.

Otogi could do nothing but stare at them. Well they sure are close. "I'll leave you two alone. I don't need to be late to class again." He shook his head and grabbed his bag before walking inside the classroom.

Mai still seemed to be somewhat in a haze before Otogi’s leave snapped her out of it. “Oh! No, Otogi, wait~ This isn‘t - uh..” She took Jou’s hand, trying anything not to look at the blonde. The floor was a nice substitute. But she had to answer the blonde sometime. “It’s alright, Jou - there was no way you could have seen us.” Her focus on the floor soon turned to the direction Otogi had gone. “Come on, there is still plenty of time before class starts, Otogi~”

"…." That name sounded familiar. Otogi. That was what he'd heard before in the rumors about Mai and some new dude. This was him? That tall dark-haired guy walking away was his replacement? She certainly hadn't wasted anytime, had she? But now wasn't the time to bring it up. "Seriously, dude. I'm really sorry I…interrupted…you both," he said, feeling more awkward by the second. How did this work? "It really was an accident."

Otogi turned around, thinking he heard someone's voice. He pointed to himself, conferring that the blonde was talking to him. "Interrupt what? We were just standing there." Could it BE anymore awkward? "Really. It's not your fault; you slipped."

Mai could sense the growing awkwardness between the two, and herself. She bit her lip, walking to Otogi. “Yeah, it - it happens to everyone.” God. Just seeing Jounouchi brought back memories of everything - and their intimacy just a moment ago didn’t help at all. Her heart felt like it was in her throat, and she couldn’t look at either boy. Why had… Jou been so nice just now? It almost made her want to hope again, but - no. She remembered what had happened after that party. There was no way they could ever be together and Jounouchi obviously didn’t love her. “…” That didn’t have to hurt so much. She shouldn’t even allow herself to get all worked up like this. Finally, however, she felt her eyes rest on Otogi. …He really was a catch, and she couldn’t deny the attraction she had towards him - and she didn’t like it when he seemed to be hurt or annoyed like just a few moments ago. It didn’t mean anything when thoughts of a certain someone could possibly manage to wipe out all those feelings - or just make her more confused than ever before.

Otogi didn't even seem to notice Mai come up and start conversing with Jou and him. Otogi looked at the clock behind them. "Is the bell even going to ring? I thought it should have rang a few minutes ago." The halls were still so empty that you could hear a pin drop. "Uh,look. I'm... gonna go. I need to go to class." Why was he so nervous? It wasn't like he was her ex-boyfriend or anything,so he had nothing to worry about. But he still did. The tension was too strong, and he didn't know why. He pulled his car keys out, tempted to just skip the rest of the day - it'd give him time to clear his mind.

The tension in the air was unbearable, and Jou felt like he might start sweating from all the tense heat between the three. This was the new guy…but did he know who he was? Had Mai told him about…them? He couldn't help looking to Mai for a moment. That turned out to be a mistake. You're gonna crack, he thought, captivated by her profile which he forced himself to look away from. "Er…"

Mai didn’t seem to notice Jou’s gaze, as she gazed up at Otogi. “Class doesn’t start until another five minutes,” she told him. He seemed to be acting differently… And she rose an eyebrow when she saw him go for his keys. “Are you alright?” …guh. What a dumb question to ask. NONE of them were alright at the moment. Her gaze flickered back to Jou for an instant, and she immediately regretted doing so. There was just something about him that was - off, and she wanted to fix it like she always used to. But she looked back at Otogi again. …You’re a horrible person, Mai.

"Really? Seems like it's been an hour-long passing period." He shoved his hands in his pockets, going back on his decision to leave. "Yeah Mai,I'm fine," he finally said to Mai,letting his bangs droop over his eyes. "So what are we supposed to do,just stand here?" All the tension was starting to make him sick. "Something in the air says something here is unresolved, but you know,we're not solving it by not doing anything." He seemed to get harsher and harsher with every word.

Mai blinked. “… Well I just wanted to spend more time with you - is that a crime?” Was Otogi getting MAD because they happened to run into the person Mai just had a brutal break up with? Yeah okay that made sense STFU.“…..” Well, she supposed an introduction would at least be appropriate. “Otogi, this is Jounouchi. Jounouchi, this is Otogi. And - everything is as resolved at it’s ever going to be.” She was surprised how well she held that up, even if she almost broke at the end there. …Maybe her annoyance with Otogi helped her through.

That had to be the strangest introduction ever. Jounouchi arched a brow back at Mai and then to the other. This guy was DEFINITELY the new boyfriend, and he had to ignore the tug of his heart breaking in half. "….Hey," he said, a sort of forced half-smile twisting his face.

"Hi," he said, his voice a bit low. He held his hand out, hoping Jou'd take the clue and shake it. "I didn't mean to sound like an ass. Sorry. To the both of you." He shrugged, sighing loudly. "Guess you could say I don't have the greatest time with first impressions."

Giving Otogi a calculating look, Jounouchi reached out and rather firmly took the hand. "No problem," he said blandly. Without really knowing it, he was measuring the other up. "It happens."

Mai glanced over the two as they greeted each other, selfishly wondering if Jou was feeling anything at all. She quickly forced that thought away, knowing that the other blonde disliked her to the largest degree at the moment. She coughed quietly. “Otogi’s my boss, actually. He’s the creator of one of the greatest games in the world.” She looked back at Otogi, smiling with pride. “Dungeon Dice Monsters - perhaps you’ve heard of it?” She asked Jou, blinking in his direction quickly.

Jounouchi's eyes became wide, but not at the game Mai mentioned. It didn't strike him that he was shaking the hand of a game maker. "Your boss?" he repeated. Something about that...didn't sit right with him. "Well..." he forced a smile, taking back his hand. "I'm glad you get along so well your boss, Mai," he said, finding he disliked this guy more and more.

Otogi opened his mouth to say something, but closed it just as quick; if he'd have said anything,it'd have been thrown right back at him.

Mai felt very uncomfortable again, and Otogi wasn’t helping. “Thank you,” she told Jou, not meeting his eyes - as it was still very difficult. “I didn’t expect my boss to be my age,” she said with a bit of laughter, finding comfort in looking Otogi’s way again.

"How lucky for you both," Jou said, then reprimanded himself. Why should he care anyway? If this sleeze wanted to date his employees, let him. Mai wasn't his anymore. "Sounds like everything's great for you, Mai," he said in a much softer tone as he smiled down at her. "That's great."

Mai didn’t realize Jou was looking her way until she glanced back at him, only this time she couldn’t look away. Something about that smile made her feel like her heart was breaking all over again. “And you. Things must be great, huh? I heard you got a new job…”

Oh yeah. THAT job. Jou's smile faded a bit, but he coughed up a small laugh to cover it. "Oh yeah. Down at the hardware store. Pay's not great and my boss is an ass, but...at least it's something," he explained. "At least until I can get something better."

Mai felt herself smile. He was acting so normal, but this situation was anything but. They almost sounded like they could be friends. But the memory of Seto’s party claimed otherwise. “Well I hope you do find something better.” She really meant it, and in more ways than one. Even if one way made her hurt a little, she realized as she bit her lip.

Otogi stood idly by,watching the tension rise between them. "Good luck on finding a job,Jounouchi. If you find yourself look -" He stopped himself before he spoke too much; Mai and Jou working together could be a bit awkward... for everyone. He shook his head and smiled to Jou,before starting to walk off. "Uh it was nice meeting you, even if we got off to a bad start."

Jounouchi blinked back up to Otogi. "Oh...uh yeah. Sure," he waved a bit, shoving his free hand into his pocket. "Same to you, Otogi." He looked back to Mai, softly again. "I guess...I'll see ya later," he told her, taking a few steps back. It hit him that this actually could be the last time he really spoke with her, and it tore at his heart. She certainly looked happy.... "Later," and with that he turned as the bell rang.

“…Bye,” Mai whispered, feeling the finalization of their goodbyes. She quickly turned to face the door to her classroom. “Come on, Otogi,” she said, practically rushing into the room.

The End.
