Jul 23, 2013 20:36

Hi everyone! :) How are you doing? I had a little time before me, so I wrote the first tutorial for the activity Ask the Maker 5.0 requested by poisonfield and erinae! A big thanks to vampire_sessah who corrected the mistakes in this, thank you Kat! ♥

I love this tut and there are really interesting tips in it and it's inspiring me to try my hands on some more complex icons again after telling myself that I don't really like them at the moment and that I can't execute them at all. You make it seem so easy here and that is really motivating!

Aaw thank you! :D This is the point, we really shouldn't be afraid of testing complex icons, let's just go crazy and pasting everything we can on the poor canvas ahah :'). I can't wait to see what you'll come with!

Oooh, this guide is awesome! I love your classification of complexity types, that'll come in handy if I need some ideas for complex icons so I'm definitely memming this :> Fantastic exaples too and I love seeing the process for those icons!

This is so going into my memories!

Really helpful tutorial! You make it look easy and I really like how you classified them by categories.
It's funny because when I try complexity, I ALWAYS fall into that "things you shouldn't do" category! lol

Thank you :D

Aaw, I'm sure you don't! And even if you do, it's easy to correct things now that you're aware of it ahah :'D And tbh, I have more *failed* complex icons than good ones, so XD. After all, the aim of this is to progress and you can't do it without making mistakes! :D

Wow, this was a great read! Very inspiring~

It blows my mind that you work on the composition of some of these icons BEFORE working with the screencap though. I've always started with the screencap, so this is a totally new thing for me...

I'm glad it can help :)

To be honest, I can work both, sometimes I want to do the composition first, because I have a precise idea of what I want. But I don't have any fixed plan, I can work on coloring, adding a screencap on a whim, then think about something and so re-do everything, I'm really flexible on this :). You have to find what works for you ^^

The thing is that you have to try it and work with it :). I'm not an expert at this, far from that, but before I was never making complex icons because it just didn't work. But if you make some (even if you don't post them) and work on it, you're really going to improve :D. You can stay simple at first, as I said block is an amazing way to do complex icons, and having a good block icon is already something hard. And then you can move on and do something more ~complex and see what happen :). GO CRAZY! I hope this tut will help!
