Why I sometimes consider the complete destruction of the human race a positive outcome

The death of Aaron 'Shorty' Hall.

I just...there are no words for the sorrow this evokes in me, for Aaron Hall and those who knew him, and for all of us, that we live in a world and society that produced the individuals who killed him. Who think that 'gay panic' or anything is an excuse, a valid defense, for their actions. Anything, I stress. ( Read more... )

I'm not surprised (more's the pity) by murder, I'm not foolish enough to think, oh, well that happened in Indiana, it couldn't happen somewhere else.

I am deeply disappointed that the media has ignored the story. It reinforces my strong suspicion that most media outlets have become nothing more than the modern day circus, feeding us infotainment and carefully spun propaganda that has exactly as much value as something else that's spun: cotton candy.

I did the same with my usually locked rl lj. The thing is, I am from Indiana. Most of the people who are on my rl flist are either from Indiana or attended university or high school there with me. I can understand me not hearing anything about it because I'm studying abroad right now, but not one of them heard anything about it until I posted a link.

That is the most disturbing aspect for me, the way that it has been muffled. I consider where I live to be rather backward and conservative, but local news certainly covered the double murder of a gay couple here and did it before the perpetrators were linked to burning a synagogue in the capitol. No one hesitated to call it a hate crime either.

Why wasn't the Aaron Hall story picked up? Because he wasn't rich or attractive enough, because there was no weeping wife and children, because he wasn't gay? None of those things matter. He was a human being who shouldn't have suffered like that. No one should.

The lack of coverage rates its own investigation.

My posts are almost always about ultimately unimportant things, but links to this have showed up several times on my flist. I wanted to be sure people outside that circle saw it, too. I was shocked recently when I friends locked how many people read and it seemed like a way to utilize our community. And then I found I needed to express my own reaction.

I'm from Indiana, I live here when I'm not at school and I'm here now, and this is the first I've heard of this murder. Our lack of regard for human life is what scares me the most about America. And about Indiana, for that matter.

About everywhere.

I hesitated over posting, then decided if anyone saw the story as a result who hadn't already, then it would be worthwhile.
