The evening broke cool and windy. It was nice enough, and Remy decided he would walk to the Thorn house, not least so he could set his thoughts in order

Luka was upstairs reading when a soft knock sounded at the door, barely audible but still breaking the careful silence he had constructed around him. He couldn't imagine who would be calling, certainly not any of the newly back from France lovebirds. Perhaps it was one of his uncles. Not Fen, Fen always called before stopping by, but perhaps Gabriel was in the area and had decided to pay his nephew a visit.
With an unnecessary sigh Luka set his book down on the coffee table, rising from the couch and running his fingers through his hair a bit. He knew Gabriel wouldn't care what he looked like, but it wouldn't do for a Toreador to appear careless in anyone's eyes.
Luka hadn't expected to find his brother standing on the step, and looking nervous as ever. "Rémy," Luka smiled, trying hard to drive away a bitter note from his words. His smile was genuine though, as he held the door open for Rémy, despite his persistent slight jealousy. "It's so good to see you

Remy trembled when the door opened, but despite everything, Luka was still Luka, and still looked like Luka, if cold, still and even more radiantly beautiful. He was still, in a way, Remy's baby brother that he'd mourned for years before finding him alive, and he was still Remy's first true love.
Remy fell into Luka's arms as soon as the door was open, laughing with relief. Despite all of Ryan's worries, Luka hadn't changed so much after all.
"Were you busy?" Remy asked, voice trembling despite his every effort to sound confident. "I didn't mean to disturb you. Maybe I should have called. I'm sorry I haven't been around, yet, there's just. It's been a bit of an ordeal, getting back."
Remy took a shaky breath, trying to figure out how, exactly, he was supposed to bring up the subject at hand.
"I missed you too," Luka pulled back to study his brother's face, giving him another sweet smile as he reached up to fluff his hair, letting his fingers linger in the wavy softness.
"I was just reading, don't worry about it, come and sit with me," Luka took Rémy's hand, leading him back toward the couch and curing up cross-legged. Once Rémy joined him he wrapped an arm around him and tugged him down so that his head was resting in his lap, one of Luka's hands trailing idly through his hair, working out any knots he found. "You must tell me all about your trip. I am still so very envious you got to go. Was it beautiful?"
Remy let Luka lead him into the house, flexing his fingers against Luka's cool hand and leaning against him slightly. Remy felt weak in that moment, weak and terrified. He knew Luka would be proud and happy and excited, all of these things. But Remy had to say the words, first, and he didn't know how

The ring on Rémy's finger felt warm against Luka's chilled fingers, almost hot. He felt a little like pulling away as Rémy told him of what it meant, but he couldn't hurt Rémy like that, so he simply tightened his grip a little, his other hand sill trailing through Rémy's hair. "I can't say that I'm not upset that I wasn't at my only brother's wedding, but I am happy for you. And I'm glad he makes you happy."
Luka curled, leaning over Rémy to meet his eyes upside down. "And if he ever does anything to hurt you, you tell me. I will not stand for that. He may be a pack mate's ghoul, but I'll tear his fucking throat out."
Luka leaned over further, letting his lips brush Rémy's softly, a smile spreading over his own as he drew away and settled back again. "How did Eden take it?"
