Interesting article, except for this sentence: "The ultimate cause of the nocebo effect, however, is not neurochemistry but belief." Uh, hi - belief happens in the brain last I checked. Unless New Scientist wants to convince me otherwise...
I think New Scientist is drawing a distinction between something that is of the brain (release of neurotransmitters, for example) and something that is of the mind. ¬_¬ Hard to really define where that line is, in my opinion, because they can directly influence each other and it's difficult to pinpoint where the cause lies.
If I felt like giving New Scientist the benefit of the doubt - which I don't - I'd guess they mean "we don't know how to make this happen by injecting you with something."
