the_dark_fire Summary: Jensen comes home late one night with Chris and Steve, all shocked by what they find.
Jensen unlocked the door to his and Jared’s new house, his two best friends; Chris and Steve, following right behind him. Jensen had gone out with his friends to watch one of their latest gigs, leaving Jared to relax at home with his dogs after a long day at work. Their laughter echoed off the walls, disrupting the silence that had engulfed the house.
“Jared? Jared we’re back!” Jensen yelled. Hearing no response, Jensen led his friends further into the house where they could help themselves to more drinks.
Jensen walked around the house seeking out his boyfriend, however when no one was found did Jensen get worried. “Jared? Where are you?” He called, bringing attention to himself from Chris and Steve who both had curious looks on their faces.
Each man set off in different directions looking for Jared, all silent as they listened for any clues as to his whereabouts. It was only when Jensen was passing the door into their rarely used den that he heard the faint sounds of someone whimpering or crying. He alerted his friends to what he had found and they all armed themselves, Jensen with a bat, Steve with a knife he picked up from the kitchen, and Chris with a frying pan.
Steve carefully swung the door open allowing Jensen to go in first where they slowly made their way down the old stairs. In the dim light Jensen couldn’t see anything out of order, the three plush couches were unmoved and the large TV untouched, the only thing that was slightly out of place was that the radio was turned on low.
Peering over the large couch, Jensen sighed as he lowered his weapon, prompting the other guys to do so as well. “Jared baby? What’s wrong?” Jensen asked as he walked around the couch where Jared was seated in front of, on the floor, with tears streaming down his eyes.
Jared looked up in embarrassment, quickly trying to wipe the offending tears away with the backs on his hand, “Hey, I didn’t hear you guys come home, I... I thought you guys would be out longer?” Jared questioned looking back to see Steve and Chris standing behind Jensen looking unsure.
“It’s already really late Jay baby,” Jensen said sitting beside his lover, wiping away a stray tear.
“Oh...” Jared said looking anywhere but at the faces of the other men in the room.
“So are you going to tell me what you were doing down here all by yourself crying in the middle of the night?”
“I um... I was kinda bored but tired, so I came down here looking for something to read when I found this,” he said holding up a tattered old copy of ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’.
Jensen grabbed the book and scanned the blurb on the back cover. “Oh Jared,” Jensen said smiling sweetly at his caring boyfriend. “It still doesn’t really explain why you came down here though?” He asked once more.
“Well, after reading that, I... I wanted to get a wish too, so I looked up how to make the cranes and then got to work, but the dogs were annoying and I couldn’t concentrate so I came down here?” he replied sounding more unsure of himself by the end of it, still well aware of the other two men present.
“Ok, so how many have you done?” Jensen asked making himself more comfortable, ignoring his friends for a bit more.
“Umm...” Jared pushed the coffee table back a bit and revealed the growing pile of paper cranes that littered the floor. They were all in different sizes and colours, more looking poorly made but the meaning obvious. “Around one hundred?”
Jensen met his lover’s eyes, pride shinning through them. People always saw Jared as the less serious of the two, the ‘child’ of the group, but they didn’t see how loving, caring and serious he could really be. How when he put his mind to something he went for it.
“So are you gonna show me how it’s done?” Jensen asked picking up a plain white piece of paper.
“Umm yeah, ok.” He said looking back at Steve and Chris first.
“Oh, we can just leave?” Steve said.
“Nah, go get us some beer bitches, and chips! And come back down here, we got some work to do!” Jensen said smiling.
Both Steve and Chris returned the smile huffing out an exaggerated sigh as they moved upstairs. The duo returned their weapons and retrieved enough drinks and food to last them the rest of the night and then headed back down stairs where they were greeted with the sight of Jared and Jensen lip locked together in a heated kiss.
“You boys gonna invite us to join or we just here to watch?” Chris said pushing his way to the other side of the coffee table where he was joined by Steve.
Jared and Jensen slowly separated, both use to their friend’s antics by now, none of them were afraid to show some affection around one another, and right now it seemed like Jared needed it more than ever.
“Ok Jared, show us how it’s done!” Steve exclaimed reaching out for another small square of paper.
“Well first you wanna fold the paper in half like this and half again...” He started, showing them exactly what to do. Jared looked up and smiled at his three friends, still not able to comprehend the fact that he had such amazing people surrounding him, when he noticed that Chris wasn’t paying any attention. He looked down, once again feeling embarrassed, Chris probably just thought he was acting like a child again.
Jensen noticed the sudden change in demeanour of his boyfriend and looked up to see what he was staring at. “Chris man, what are you doing? Don’t you wanna learn how to fold these things?” Jensen said slightly pissed at the fact that Chris wasn’t paying attention.
Chris looked away for a split second then looked back at the other people present, making sure he was holding Jared’s gaze he said; “I already know how to fold origami, I was waiting for Jared to finish showing y’all so that we could all get started,” he said, his cheeks turning slightly red from embarrassment.
“Aw, see that’s why I love you!” Steve said planting a sloppy kiss on his lover’s cheek.
“Enough man! Now listen to Jay cause it don’t get any easier.” Chris said picking up a blue square and folding it just as Jared had done and still continuing with the folding until he pulled open a beautifully crafted paper crane.
Spurred into things now, all four men working on folding more origami. They spent hours working on the project, all folding at different paces, laughing and joking around at the same time. The room smelt like smoke and stale beer which had lingered on the clothes of the three older men, but no one noticed it as they pushed on into the morning.
Each man was bone weary tired and light headed, just thankful that they didn’t switch to tequila at any point of the night, by the time they were closing in on the 1000 cranes. The sun was already up and the new day had begun, but in the small den none of that mattered in the least.
All the paper cranes had been piled together in the corner of the room as they worked, all keeping track of how many were done by a piece of paper that sat next to it.
“Well guys, it looks like we only need four more,” Jensen said recounting the tally marks that had been made.
The four friends each took a different coloured piece of paper and looked at each other, waiting for one of the others to start.
“Wait.” Jared said before anyone did start on the last ones. “We should all write our wish down on the paper that we are using, that’s how it works,” Jared said reaching over and picking up four pens from the couch behind him where all the supplies lay.
“But Jay, doesn’t the saying go that you only get one wish when you build 1000 cranes?” Chris said, already having admitted to having read the story previously.
“Yeah, but...” He started only to get interrupted by Jensen.
“Well then you should be the one to get the wish Jared, it was your idea after all.”
“I know, but I figure, we all made some - no more than some, a hell of a lot, and I... I believe that each of us deserves the wish right? I mean hell even if only one would come true we all should have the chance to let that happen,” Jared explained.
Jensen leaned over and lovingly kissed his lover on the lips.
“Ok then, we’ll all write one wish down each,” Steve said scribbling something down on his page.
The other men followed suit, writing down a short sentence on their piece of paper and then started folding it at the same time, each finishing the final pull together as well.
“So now that we have one thousand paper cranes all done, what do you want to do with them Baby?” Jensen asked leaning into his lovers arms.
“Maybe we could release the birds? Ya know, let ‘em go outside or something?” Jared yawned.
“I like it.” “Same.” Steve and Chris replied to the idea.
“Ok then, let’s do it!” Jensen said jumping up, all signs of exhaustion gone.
They all gathered up the cranes in plastic containers and bags ensuring that they had each and every single crane with them, the ones with the wishes on them safely tucked into their pockets, and moved upstairs into the boy’s bedroom where there was a balcony facing the backyard.
“Jared you should let the first one go,” Steve suggested.
Jared gave a slight nod and walked up to the railing, a delicate yellow crane cupped carefully in his large hands. Breathing in and closing his eyes, Jared opened up his hands just as a large gust of wind passed, picking up the light piece of paper and pulling it into the wind.
The men all watched silently as the first crane left, and then they started on letting the others go too. Tossing them into the wind by the handful or individually as they watched the birds take flight. Once again it all came down to the last four cranes that they each held in their calloused hands.
They split off into their couples, Jensen wrapped up in Jared’s arms and Steve in Chris’ as they clutched at one another releasing the last of the 1000 cranes into the air.
“Thanks guys,” Jared whispered as not to break the moment, Jensen just held on to his hand tighter.
It was a few minutes after that the spell was finally broken and the four friends turned away entering the house again. Jared was the last to re-enter the house, giving one final look over his shoulder in the direction the cranes all took. He hadn’t written a wish on his piece of paper, instead he had simply written down ‘Thank you’, knowing that he had been granted his wish when the three other men joined him. He didn’t need anything else.
“Come on Jared,” Jensen whispered pulling his lover along.
Back downstairs, everyone collapsed down onto the two couches, again with Jensen in Jared’s arms and Steve in Chris’, already dozing off.
“Hey Chris, why did you come down with a frying pan before?” Jared ask with a raw voice, causing the entire group to start laughing.
Jared smiled when everything settled down again.
His wish had definitely been granted.
