Summary: Set just before and during 'Bloody Mary'. Sam's dreams start to change, no longer the nightmares haunting him but something different. Something he cant explain.
It happened slowly over a few weeks, Sam’s nightmares shifting into something more forgiving, more peaceful. The fire no longer burned above him, the woman he loved no longer bleeding. It had taken weeks, but he finally was able to get a full night’s sleep, the blonde haired angel watching over him.
“Rise and shine Sammy-boy!” Dean called from the small motel bathroom.
Sam groaned as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes, the remnants of the dream still clinging on to his memory.
He had been back in his room back at Stanford, sitting on the main bed as Jess stood in front of him. Neither moved nor spoke, they just sat there watching each other. It was a weird dream, but at least this time no one had died.
“You’ve been sleeping better,” Dean commented at some point offhandedly. Both brothers now managing a full night’s sleep.
Sam merely nodded, he didn’t understand what was going on and didn’t expect Dean to be able to help any either.
More weeks passed and the dreams kept changing. He and Jess sitting on the bed together, then in each other’s arms. Sometimes they would kiss, but never anything more. It was when they were in Toledo, Ohio that his dreams seemed to stop completely. They were on the ‘Bloody Mary’ case, where all his secrets and lies were coming to the surface too quickly for him to handle. He almost missed his dreams, even the nightmares, simply because they gave him a chance to see Jess again.
“It’s time for you to snap out of this Sam,” Dean warned as they drove out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the mirror now smashed and Bloody Mary gone.
Sam nodded but didn’t reply. He turned his head slightly to look out the window, his mouth dropping at the sight in front of him. Jess stood there, dressed in white with her golden blonde hair blowing behind her, her lips moving ever so slowly, saying something he couldn’t hear. A smirk graced her face, and just as quickly as she had appeared did she disappear again.
“I need to visit Jess,” Sam said in a soft whisper.
Dean flinched but kept his mouth shut. He turned the car around and headed back the other way. This time Sam didn’t see Jess at all.

He stood in front of her grave, the headstone polished new and the flowers still alive, before crouching down and placing the small bouquet of white roses down.
“I love you, and I’m sorry,” he whispered, his brother only feet away.
The wind whipped at his hair, like a lover’s caress against his cheek he barely made out the words.
You’re forgiven.
It was all he needed to hear. It was the reason Jess hadn’t left him until that case. He had to understand it for himself, he wasn’t actually to blame, and both he and Jess knew it. He just needed to believe it. There was no salt, no fire, no iron or anything else they usually used to get rid of a spirit. Jess was at rest now, and it was time for him to get some too.
“Let’s go Dean,” Sam spoke. This time he didn’t turn back.
