Chapter 1  |  Chapter 2  |  Chapter 3  | Chapter 4  |  Chapter 5  | Chapter 6  |  Chapter 7

The continuous mechanical beep of a flat-lining heart followed Chris as he was pushed out of the operating theatre, left standing in a quiet hallway shell-shocked with dread and fear for the two people he cared more about that anyone in the world. He didn’t even know whose machine it was that indicated a still heart. Would it be his lover of three years, the man who had seen through his tough facade and fought through his long ago built up walls, the only man that he had ever truly loved - family included - that was fighting for his life? Or the small, fragile baby, the little one he had been waiting his whole life to have but didn’t know it, the little one that had stolen his heart before he had even met it that was fighting to stay alive in a world that didn’t deserve it?

His feet started moving at their own accord, one in front of the other until he found himself surrounded by people, people he didn’t know, people who weren’t Jared or his baby. His eyes stared off in the distance, unblinking and unseeing as he walked through endless corridors, he thought he heard his name being called out and stopped for a moment. Jensen and Steve were standing in front of him, wide grins on their faces and balloons and toys in hand.

Chris’ eyes stayed lowered, never meeting his friends happy and expectant faces, he was sure they were saying something to him, most likely along the lines of ‘congratulations’ and ‘what was it?’ but he didn’t hear any of it. His legs kept pushing him forward, away from the busy waiting room and away from his friends.

“Chris?” Jensen yelled after his friend.

Jensen and Steve shared a look before dropping the presents they had in hand to chase after Chris. He had walked into the room with a dazed look on his face, but the two men had just assumed that it was from the shock of seeing his baby, of having held the baby, never had the thought crossed their minds that something bad could have happened to either person. They rushed up behind the solidly built man and grabbed onto an arm each, swivelling him around to face them.

“Chris? What happened? What’s wrong?” Steve asked urgently, wrapping his arm around Chris’ waist, almost as if to hold the older man up.

Jensen wrapped his arm over Chris’s shoulders and the three men stood huddled together, blocking out the doctors, patients, and other family members around them. Chris let out an audible sigh and the other two men carefully lead him over to some free seats. The hard plastic dug into their skin, but none of the men noticed as they waited for Chris to speak.

“I... I don’t know what happened...” Chris finally whispered, his voice low and hoarse, as he let his face fall into his open hands, fingers digging into his skull, the heel rubbing his sore eyes.

“Shh... Chris whatever it is... it will be okay, was it the baby? Was something wrong?” Steve asked gently, his own fingers running through Chris’ hair, pulling the long, greasy locks away from his face.

“It... both of them... shit! I can’t do this, I have to call Jay’s parents, they’re gonna wanna know what’s going on, I... oh god...” Chris said, his thoughts jumping all over the place before he couldn’t hold the tears in any longer.

Chris was reduced to a sobbing form, his best friends sitting either side of his, protecting him from all the other people, but who was in there, who was sitting next to Jared and their little baby, who was protecting them?

“Chris, hold on, it’s okay, we all know Jared didn’t want his parent’s to know about any of this yet, you don’t have to call them until we know more, now what happened man?” Jensen asked, his own hand rubbing up and down Chris’ arm.

“Everything seemed to be going fine, ya know? Jared was scared of course, but he was looking at me, his eyes were open and he was fine, then... then they got the little one, I don’t know, all I saw was a thick head of hair,” at that he laughed, “of course our baby has a lot of hair, have you seen the two of us?” it wasn’t really a question, but the man was looking for any sort of silver lining to this grey cloud.

“And then everything went south. The doc said the baby... that the baby wasn’t crying, something about its airways, then Dr Slade was saying something about Jared, said he was bleeding too much or something, then I was pushed out of the OR, but all I could hear was people rushing around... that and someone’s heart monitor flat-lining,” Chris finished in a sob.

Jensen and Steve sat back for a bit, taking in the information Chris had just given them. Chris didn’t even know what sex his baby was, let alone if it was even alive or not. And then Jared. He had done so much for Chris, not many people could see how hardhearted Chris had become over the years, mainly because of his family disowning him when he came out to them, but Jared had smashed right through all those walls with an easy smile and the warmest heart. They were like two opposites, but they worked, better than anyone else they knew, and now all of that was being threatened.

Jensen and Steve had been told to wait in the family waiting room just an hour ago, leaving their friend’s with promises of seeing each other again soon. They had immediately gone to the gift shop and bought some of the most ridiculous presents they could find, from an overstuffed teddy bear to the largest bunch of balloons they could get their hands on. Upon seeing Chris they had rushed towards him, words of praise and congratulations dying on their lips as they got a proper look at their friend. He was broken. It was as simple as that.

The three men sit side by side, in one way or another touching, as they wait for word from a doctor, either the neonatal doctor looking after the premature baby, or doctor Slade who was looking after Jared. Steve and Jensen were whispering quietly to one another over Chris’ slumped form, when the doors to the waiting room opened revealing a very haggard and tired looking doctor.

All three men spring up and off their seats before the doctor even has a chance to call out their names, they give her a once over and notice all the blood covering the front of the gown, the sight of which knocks Chris back into the chair. Dr Slade had her mouth open and ready to say something, but shut it when her eyes landed on Christian, she had met him only six months ago, and he had already made place for himself in her heart.

“Christian?” She asked carefully, slowly coming up to stand before the crestfallen man. “He’s alive Christian, Jared’s alive. He isn’t doing so well, but he’s hanging in there, just,” she said immediately, knowing where his head must have gone to by the sight of her. She heard the two men behind her exhale with obvious relief, but the man in front of her was still looking down without any hint of recognition in his eyes.

Dr Slade turned her head and indicated that the two men should come forward with a slight tilt of her head, both of them immediately rushing to her side.

“Did you hear that man, Jared, he’s hanging on,” Steve urged trying to get some sort of response from his friend.

“Do you think he could see Jared?” Jensen asked, still facing Chris.

“I can arrange it as fast as possible, he’s still in recovery now, you three have a long road ahead of you, and unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to be easy,” she said sadly.

“We can handle it, whatever it is,” Chris finally spoke, his eyes boring into the doctors, wet with tears but hardened with determination.

Dr Slade nodded once, “Good, I’m sorry I don’t have any information about your daughter, but as soon as I can I’ll come and get you to see Jared,” she said, not realising her mistake.

Jensen and Steve’s heads shot up faster than the doctor would have thought possible, “daughter?” they echoed.

“My... My baby... it’s... it’s a girl?” Chris asked, eyes now shining with hope.
