Chapter One Chapter Two
The first thing Jared becomes aware of is the smell, the antiseptic filling his nostrils, suffocating him. Jared becomes dimly aware of a pressure building against his chest, the pain mounting to intolerable levels. He thinks his eyes are open, but it’s all dark. He lets out a whimper and hears something in the distance. There was something pulling him, the darkness receding, forward. He could hear voices soothing and begging and he desperately wanted to get to them.
“Jay? Jay, please if you can hear me, just wake up. Please, wake up,” the rough, southern voice begged.
Chris watches Jared’s still form with guarded eyes. It had been four days since the incident, and Jared still hadn’t woken up. The doctors had explained that they had to do emergency exploratory surgery to find and retrieve the bullet and to set Jared’s wrist which had broken from him pulling free from the cabinets. There had been signs of Jared coming to in the past few days; eyes moving under his closed lids, fingers twitching, but today, he was sure he heard Jared moan.
It takes a while longer, Chris still watching Jared intently, begging him to open his eyes before Chris notices more moans and whimpers coming from Jared. Chris continues to urge Jared on, begging his lover to wake up and is ultimately rewarded when two hazel coloured eyes blink back up towards him.
“-ris?” Jared moaned, his eyes searching around the room.
“Right here, Jay, I’m right here,” Chris whispered grasping Jared’s large hand in his. “Look at me, here. Come on, now,” Chris urged, smiling when Jared’s eyes finally landed on his.
“Wha-?” Jared tried.
“Shh, it’s okay, Jared, everything will be okay, now. You were hurt, but you’re safe now,” Chris said softly, his finger’s running through Jared’s greasy hair.
Jared was silent for a moment, his eyes searching Chris’ as his mind tried to catch him up on what happened. His eyes widening at the memories he was assaulted with, “Jen! Jensen? Is he... Jen?” he whimpered.
“It’s okay, Jay, it’s okay. Jensen is fine; you saved him. He told me everything, and god damnit, I could kill you for what you did, but Jay, you’re a hero,” Chris said, the first smile in three days showing on his face, his eyes shining with pride.

When Chris had first found out what had happened from Jensen’s perspective, he was fresh off the plane and a long cab ride to the hospital only to see his best friend covered in blood. Chris had immediately rushed to Jensen and embraced his shocked friend, his hands feeling over Jensen’s body making sure for himself that there was nothing wrong with the younger man. Chris had immediately asked about Jared, needing to see the younger man for himself, but Jensen simply shook his head, not realising his mistake until Chris crumbled to the ground, face white.
Jensen lowered himself so that he was level to the fallen man who was obviously forcing himself not to cry. “Shit man, no, please. It’s okay. Jared… all I know is that he’s in surgery. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” Jensen says in a rush, his hands squeezing Chris’ shoulder.
“He’s not?” Chris asked, looking a little lost.
“No! No, he isn’t, and he won’t be for a very long time. I’m sorry, man, I can be so stupid some times,” Jensen sighed.
“What’s wrong with him? What do you know?” Chris asked, both men slowly moving away from curious eyes to a more secluded area.
“All I really know is that he’s in surgery and has been for a few hours. He had at least one shot to the gut, but other than that, they won’t tell me anything. His parents have been called; they gave consent for you to talk to the doctors and make decisions until they arrive,” Jensen informed him.
“Oh... okay, sure... right...” Chris says. He’s still stuck on the fact that Jared has at least one hole in his abdomen only to be stunned again to hear that he could have to make decisions regarding Jared’s life.
Chris’ heart was racing, and his breathing was rapid. They had been together for four years now and were definitely serious, Chris just starting to think about rings, and the only thing that kept the fans in the dark was the fact that they all thought Jared was with Jensen. But none of that mattered now. Jared had been attacked on set, and everyone would have heard about it by now. It wouldn’t be long until they all heard that Chris had come straight away and questions would be asked.
“What about filming? And the shooter? What’s going on with all of that?” Chris asked after a few minutes of trying to organise his thoughts.
“Shoo- uh filming has been completely shut down until further notice; both of us have extra security, but I don’t think it will last. The girl was psycho and that was it; she’s in custody and being charged for attempted murder...” Jensen sighed, running his fingers through his short cropped hair.
“Okay, good, yeah,” Chris muttered to himself.
The doctor finally walked in at that moment, calling for family of Padalecki, and both Jensen and Chris had rushed forward without a second thought. “Jared, please, how is he?” Chris asked.
“Is either one of you Christian Kane?” the doctor asked, all professional.
“I am, yes, I know I have medical decision making rights, now please, just tell me how Jared is,” Chris said, anticipating the doctor’s question.
“Very well,” he coughed, “Mr. Padalecki came to us with server trauma to the abdomen. He was very lucky in that the bullet missed any vital organs; we managed to remove the bullet, finding it lodged near his appendix. There was a slight tear in the appendix so we decided to just remove the organ. He did lose a large amount of blood, so we put him on a transfusion. Another bullet wound was found in his thigh; however, it was more of a graze. There was no bullet, but he did receive 15 stitches to the site,” the doctors explained carefully.
“Oh, god, he’s okay though, right? He’s fine now, yeah? When can we get him out of here?” Chris asked in a rush.
“Well, that’s not all, sir. He had damage to his wrist, too. He has a clean fracture to his left wrist, so that’s in plaster now. We are a bit worried about his high blood pressure, but we are assuming that it is from the stress of the situation rather than another condition, and we will be keeping an eye on it. He has a few bruises around his chest and arms. We were informed that he was fighting with the other person, so it will probably just be painful for a while,” the doctor added.
“Oh... okay, so... what does all that mean? When can we see him? And take him home?” Jensen asked, seeing Chris withdraw into himself.
“We’ll have to see how he is when he wakes up, but he will most likely be in here at least a week, most likely more. We have to make sure no infections develop at either site and that he doesn’t exert himself, but other than that, he should be fine. He is being settled into his room right now, and I’ll get a nurse to come get you boys when he is ready. Just be aware that he most likely won’t come around for a while.” And with that, the doctor nodded and left.
Chris and Jensen had entered Jared’s room not long after, and so began the three day wait. Jared’s parents arrived that night with Megan in tow, having only just managed to get a flight on such short notice. Chris never left Jared’s side, holding the younger man’s hand and caressing his face, the whole time whispering soft words of encouragement.
*.*
“I’m proud of you, Jay, for saving Jen like that, but I swear, you do anything like that again, and I’ll kill you myself,” Chris chided, a soft smile still on his face.
“S-sorry,” Jared coughed.
“Shh, it’s okay, Jay, let me just call the Doc, and get your parents and Jen, okay? I’ll be right back,” Chris said pushing the call button.
“Don’t leave me...” Jared begged.
“It’s okay, Jared, I’ll be right back. Everyone just went to the cafeteria to get something to eat. Look,” Chris said looking up when the door opened, “the nurse is in here now. She’ll give you a once over, and by the time you’re done, I’ll be back with everyone,” Chris smiled, patting Jared’s hand.
“Okay, just don’t be too long,” Jared said nodding towards the door, smiling hesitantly as the nurse approached. The petite nurse got to work straight away, and Chris just left with another nod.
Chris was still without a mobile phone, so he sprinted down the semi-crowded hallways until he found the small group huddled together in the far corner. All heads turned to look at the man, Jared’s parents jumping from their seats in fear. They all rushed towards one another, meeting in the middle, all eyes on Chris.
“Jared is he-?” Sharon, Jared’s mother, asked.
“Come on, he’s awake!” Chris smiled, urging them back to Jared’s room, turning around without waiting for them.
Chris led the group back to Jared’s room where he motioned for everyone else to wait for him outside before he walked in. Chris closed the door behind him, thankful that everyone else was letting him talk to Jared and the doctor first. Jared looked up and smiled in relief, his face having turned pale since Chris left him.
“Jay? Are you alright?” Chris asked coming to stand by Jared’s side.
“I was just explaining to Mr. Padalecki the extent of his injuries,” the doctor answered for him.
“Jared? Are you okay?” Chris asked specifically.
“Y-yeah, just a little shocked,” Jared nodded.
“You’re okay, Jay,” Chris reassured, “Your parents, Megan and Jensen are all waiting outside to see you. Do you want me to let them in?” Chris asked Jared softly, slowly raking his fingers through Jared’s hair.
Jared looked up at the doctor questioningly, but seeing no issue from the doctor, Jared nodded his head, turning so he was facing the door. Chris placed a chaste kiss to Jared’s lips before going over and opening the door, which was immediately rushed by the group.
“Jared! Honey! Oh, darling! Oh, thank God! Thank you! How are you… are you okay?” Sharon asks coming up to Jared’s side.
Jared looked slightly startled by his mother’s questioning, but took as deep a breath as he could and responded as well as possible, “I’ve been better; I honestly don’t feel anything. They have me on some good stuff,” Jared joked.
“Oh, honey you had us all so worried!” Sharon cried, dabbing at her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Mom, guys. Uh, would it be possible to talk to Jensen for a bit? Alone,” Jared asked, noticing how Jensen was hanging back away from the group.
“Of course, son, we’ll be waiting outside,” Jerry, Jared’s dad, said.
“I love you, Jared,” Megan said before leaving the room; Chris, Jerry and Sharon following.
Jensen stayed near the door, not making any movements or even meeting Jared’s eyes. They stayed silent for a few minutes, Jared looking over his best friend making sure the other man was okay. He seemed fine on the outside, a little pale perhaps, but nothing serious enough to warrant any concern.
“Jensen? You can come here...” Jared tried, unsure if his friend actually wanted to still be around him.
Jensen’s head snapped up, his eyes wide as he looked at Jared. He slowly walks toward Jared before taking the large hand in his two smaller ones. “Jay,” Jensen cried, tears falling from his eyes. “God, Jared, never, and I mean never, do anything like that again! I thought you were dead! I thought I had lost you!” he sobbed.
Jared used his free hand and wrapped it around the back of Jensen’s head, pulling the man closer to him, pushing Jensen’s head into the crook of his neck as he allowed the older man to weep. “Shh, its okay, I’m here. I’m right here,” Jared cooed, trying to reassure Jensen. It took a while, but Jensen had soon calmed down enough that he was no longer sobbing, silent tears still streaming down his cheeks.
Jared shuffled as much as he could, without aggravating his injuries further, and pulled Jensen down to lie next to him. Jensen curled his body around Jared’s and allowed the weight of Jared’s cast over his hip to reassure him that Jared was still there.
“I swear, Jared, you do anything like that ever again, and I will kill you myself. I can’t believe you would risk your life for me, Jay. God, I don’t even know what to say!” Jensen mumbled, his head still hidden in Jared’s neck.
“Jensen, don’t you think you’d do the same if the reverse were to occur? If it was my life in danger then wouldn’t you do anything you could to help me?” Jared asked, running the fingers of his good hand up and down Jensen’s spine.
“Of course, I’d do anything I could Jared but...” Jensen started.
“Exactly, Jen, roles reversed, we’d still probably be right here, and that’s okay, Jen. We are still here, and that’s all that matter’s, right?” Jared said softly.
“Yeah, yeah, of course,” Jensen said snuggling further into Jared’s embrace.
The door opened slightly around half an hour later with Chris poking his head into the room, checking on his lover and friend. What Chris saw brought a small, sad smile to his face as he watched Jensen shuffle closer to Jared in his sleep. Jared on the other hand was just laying there holding his friend, awake but obviously tired. Chris carefully slid further in the quiet room making his presence known to Jared before walking up to his lover’s bedside.
Chris grasped Jared’s hand in his and placed a quick kiss on the bruised knuckles before sweeping the hair back off of Jared’s face. Jared rewarded Chris with a shaky but vibrant smile. He was obviously still very tired but holding it together for his friend.
“How are you doing, Jay? Want me to get him up?” Chris asked in a whisper, allowing Jensen to continue resting.
“I’m okay, tired but fine. I just want to go home and rest, just you and me,” Jared sighed.
“Soon, Jay, I promise. The doc said we can take you home later this week. They just want to keep an eye on you for a little bit longer. What about everything else? I mean... are you going to be okay going back to filming and back to that place again?” Chris asked in all seriousness.
“I guess I’ll have to be right? I... I am nervous about going back, seeing everyone and most likely their pity, but I will be okay; nothing like this will happen again... right?” Jared whispered in return, smiling when Jensen once again nuzzled into his side.
“No, Jared, it was never meant to happen to start with, but now that it has, I’ve been told there’s gonna be extra security and everything. You’ll be safe, Jare...” Chris started.
“But I don’t want things to change...” Jared interrupted, only to be interrupted himself.
“Don’t you see, though, Jared? They have to, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It’s all going to be for the best, Jay. It might take a while to get use to, but it’s only for your safety,” Chris explained, caressing Jared’s cheek with his thumb.
“I know. Doesn’t mean I have to like it,” Jared sighed.
Chris smiled and leaned down, placing a kiss on Jared’s forehead, nose and finally, his lips. Their air mixed, the gentle puffs of warm breath brushing against their faces. “I love you, Jay, and all I want is for you to be safe,” Chris whispered.
Jared opened his mouth ready to respond, but the moment was broken by Jensen waking. Jensen snuffles slightly and curls into Jared some more before rubbing at his eye. “Jay?” Jensen yawns.
“Right here, Jen, right here,” Jared smiles, his gaze not breaking from Chris’.
“How you feeling, Jenny?” Chris asks, one of his hands brushing over Jensen’s hair.
“Been better, I just want everything to settle down and for things to go back to normal,” Jensen sighed.
“Yeah, don’t we all. While you two were together, Kripke called and said fans have been going crazy and that they haven’t received so many letters and gifts since the show started,” Chris said softly.
“Wow...” Jared breathed. He had known they had loyal fans, but this just proved it, proved how much they cared for the actors and their wellbeing.
“We gotta do something to say thanks to ‘em,” Jared said.
“Well, you get better and get back to filming, show everyone that you two are fine, show us all that you are fine,” Chris said, giving both of them pointed looks.
“Yeah, yeah, we can do that. As soon as we get out of here, we get back to filming and maybe we could do a special interview or something?” Jared said, nodding his head in agreement.
“We’ll work it out. First, we have to get you well and out of this hospital, and from there, we can work out the rest,” Jensen agreed, noticing Chris nodding, too.
“Let me get your family back in here; I think they must be freaking out by now. They want to make sure their son and brother is fine for themselves. Come on, Jensen, let’s go get you some coffee,” Chris says nudging Jensen up and off the bed.
Chris fetched Jared’s parents from the hallway and left the small family alone for some privacy. In the mean time, Chris and Jensen snuck away back to the cafeteria to talk. The Padalecki’s spoke in soft tones ensuring that their youngest son was alright, pampering the younger man and generally spoiling him. Chris was doing much of the same thing, ensuring that Jensen was feeling okay now that he got to see Jared.
By the end of the day, the two groups rejoined in Jared’s hospital room where Jared tried as best he could to reassure everyone that he was fine, a little shaken up but just thankful that he was alive and that the girl had done no serious harm, regardless of what could have been. When asked why, he simply stated that even though it could have happened, it didn’t. And that was enough for him.
It was late, and Jared’s family and Jensen left the young man to rest, not leaving until they had Chris promise that he would look after Jared and then saying that they would be back early the next morning. Jared smiled and agreed, telling them that he loved them and wishing them all a good night.
Once everyone was gone, both men sighed. It had been a long day, and they had barely gotten any time to themselves. “Come here,” Jared requested, his hand out and waiting.
Chris smiled before taking Jared’s hand into his own and settling himself on the bed beside Jared’s larger form. It was a tight fit, but they managed it without hurting Jared any more than he already was. Jared rested his head against Chris’ chest, breathing in deeply before letting out another long sigh and closing his eyes, the fingers raking through his hair calming him down.
“I don’t know what I would have done had something happened to you, Jared,” Chris started, thankful Jared had his eyes closed.
“It’s okay, Chris,” Jared said clutching at the other man “you won’t have to know, not for a very long time,” he whispered, burying his head further into Chris’ warm embrace.
“I hope so,” Chris sighed, pushing his nose into Jared’s hair and closing his eyes, his tears falling silently into the brown mop beneath him, soaking the hair, and if Jared felt it, he didn’t give any mention to the wetness.
The two men lay together, clutching at one another until exhaustion finally overcame them, and the lull of sleep became too much to resist.
