It was a hot summer’s day, most people smart and sane enough to spend the day indoors or near cool water. Sergeant Jared Padalecki however was stuck working, driving around Houston waiting on calls and jobs. He was in his short sleeved collared shirt, the HSPCA emblem shining proud over his breast and slacks, his hat sitting on the seat next to him as he was radioed his next address. Jared had been part of the SPCA for nearly four years and was definitely one of their best, not only able to work well with the people but also having a certain way with the animals affected too.
“Three dogs abandoned not too far from here,” Jared sighed, summing up what he had just been told to himself. He’d have to speak to the neighbours about how long they had been left alone, check the premises to make sure it really was abandoned, capture the dogs and check to see if they were registered, all on site and hopefully within an hour so he could get the dogs out of the heat and back to base as soon as possible.
He parked his van in front of the old house, and got out, grabbing his hat and equipment before walking up to the front door. He knocked and waited then knocked again. No answer. He whistled for the dogs and heard some barking, time to go to the neighbours. The first house on his left was empty as well, but the people on his right were all but willing to help. They explained how the people who were living there had left a couple of weeks ago without telling anyone.
“Why didn’t anyone call before hand?” he asked, not letting his emotions get in the way of his professionalism.
“They said they were coming back!” the older woman argued.
“That’s fine Ma’am, thank you for all you help,” Jared sighed.
He went around to the side of the house and checked the gate, it was locked but with Jared’s height he easily managed to climb over. The back yard was a mess, over grown plants and pieces of junk and scrap metal littered the small yard, it wasn’t a suitable habitat for anyone. In the back corner Jared spotted two largish brown dogs, meaning that there was still another somewhere. Keeping an eye out on his surroundings he slowly approached the two dogs.
Jared expertly crouched down and offered out his hand to the two dogs, one male and the other female he noted, and waited to see how the dogs would react to his presence. Both dogs were badly emaciated, their bones obvious, and they were covered in fleas, the poor things. The male got up on all fours slowly, the female lying behind him still, and growled slightly before sniffing at Jared’s hand. It took a while, but eventually Jared was able to get close enough to the two dogs, the male returning to his mate’s side, both dogs were in serious need of medical attention, but before Jared started rounding up the animals he got his camera out for evidence.
Taking a few shots of the dogs and their environment he realised that there were no bowls out, no food or water had been made available, however no matter how much Jared wanted to give them something, he knew they would have to wait until the vet.
“Shh, I got you guys now,” Jared whispered, looping the rope leash around the male. “Come on sweetie,” he added getting the other around the girl with ease. “Let’s get out of here,” he said standing back up and starting off back to the car.
The male stood and followed easily, but it took more effort for the female, she lifted her head and then dropped it back down, facing away from them. Jared sighed, praying that this beautiful girl wouldn’t have to be put down. He wrapped the male’s lead around his hand a few times before kneeling down and scooping the female up in his arms, lifting her with more ease than he was comfortable with.
When he stood up he finally realised why the female had refused to move. The site before him almost bringing him to tears. Down in the dirt was the third dog. A tiny little brown puppy, barely more than six weeks old from the looks of it, fleas covered the whole body and flies were swarming over it biting the flesh, the eyes were... Jared just wanted to erase the image from his head forever. He sighed before walking back to the car, the boy following slowly with his head down and the girl whimpering in his arms.
Jared locked the two dogs into the same create, knowing they’d be better off together before finding a towel and returning to the small pup. He took a deep breath before taking several more pictures of the dead animal and then picking up the tiny thing with the towel and wrapping it up.
“I’m sorry puppy,” he whispered, it was on days like this when he truly hated his job.
With a heavy heart he called in the two dogs needing veterinary attention before heading back to the station.
“Copy that, Dr. Kane is waiting for your arrival,” crackled a voice over the radio making Jared smile slightly.
“What have you got for me Padalecki?” Dr. Kane asked in all seriousness, greeting Jared as he arrived.
“Two dogs, one female the other male, both showing extreme cases of emaciation and covered in fleas, one pup; deceased,” he replied immediately.
The older veterinarian face softened at Jared’s words, knowing just how much the younger man would be affected by his find. Everyone at the precinct knew how deeply Jared felt for all his cases. A hand clapped Jared’s shoulder but that was it, they had to get to work now on saving the remaining two dogs.
“Bring them in, we’ll give them a check out and see what we can do for them,” he smiled walking back into his office without waiting for Jared.
Jared retrieved the two dogs in the same way he had before, bringing them to the vet. He placed the girl on the cold table, Dr. Kane checking over her while Jared crouched beside the male and waited. The vet was thorough but fast, giving Jared time to take more pictures where needed. They were finally done checking over the two adult dogs, probably around three to five years old, and handed them off to two nurses to scrub them clean from fleas and feed them with some water and cooked chicken which would be easy on their stomachs.
“Why don’t you bring me the pup now? I’ll look him over for a cause of death,” Dr. Kane suggested.
“It’s pretty obvious why it died,” Jared mumbled before walking away to retrieve the mangy thing.
Jared handed the bundle over to the vet and stood back, watching stoically as the doctor unwrapped the towel to reveal the puppy. Under the hard lights of the operating theatre the little dog’s condition looked far worse than Jared had previously thought. The vet looked up at Jared once the puppy was completely exposed, silently scrutinising the young official.
“Are you okay Padalecki?” he asked.
“Yeah... I mean yes, carry on,” Jared replied, chocking down his tears.
The examination went quicker than the others, the dog was deemed to have been no more than eight weeks, closer to five by the vet’s estimation and was obviously malnourished. Being as he was so much younger than the other two he had no chance of surviving.
“We’re done here, I’ll write up my report and leave it on your desk by Monday,” the vet said covering the tiny body again.
“Sure thing, see you around,” Jared sighed, returning to his own desk to file some paper work before he was due to get back out there.
Jared returned to an empty house many hours later, he didn’t bother to turn on any of the lights, just walked straight to the bathroom and stripped down, needing to wash away the long day from his skin. He rested his arm up on the cool tiled wall and then placed his forehead over it, letting the hot water cascade over his body, the scalding hot water stinging his skin but soothing his muscles. He closed his eyes and simply stood under the harsh spray.
He didn’t hear the front door open, nor the stomping feet or slamming doors. He didn’t even realise anyone else was in the bathroom with him until he felt two arms wrap around his waist. Jared jumped slightly but immediately leaned back against the strong body behind him, allowing the other man to take his weight.
“Are you okay?” the rough voice asked.
“I will be,” Jared replied.
“Come here.”
Jared turned around in the shorter man’s arms, his own coming up around his lover’s shoulders. He looked deep into the baby blue eyes and saw nothing but love. He sighed before ducking his head down into the crook of the other man’s neck kissing the exposed skin, feeling fingers dig into the muscles on his back.
“I hate having to act all professional with you at work...” Jared mumbled.
“I know, I hate it too, I hate seeing you so sad and there being nothing I can do about it, we’ll tell them soon, I promise,” Chris sighed.
Chris had been a veterinarian at the HSPCA for more than eight years, meeting Jared on his first day with the team he had been scared and excited, something Chris hadn’t seen in ages. When Jared and his partner at the time had brought back their first case Chris saw how the animals trusted the young man and was immediately intrigued. Eventually Chris asked Jared out for a beer after a particularly bad day and the rest as they say was history.
Jared moved his head and kissed his lover, pushing his tongue into the older man’s mouth and holding on until the need for air became too great. Chris grabbed the bar of soap and lathered it up in his hands before taking the time to wash Jared’s body, massaging the muscles and washing away the grime of a hard day.
“I’m too tired Chris...” Jared mumbled, already half asleep.
“It’s okay Jay, this is just to make you feel better,” he said, pushing Jared back under the spray to wash off all the suds.
He gave himself a quick wash and rinse before shutting off the water and pulling two towels off the rack. He helped Jared out and wrapped the fluffy towel over his body before quickly wrapping the other around his waist. He then dried the exhausted man and led him back into their bed room where he pushed the younger man in without anything on. He dried himself off quickly before joining Jared in bed, pulling him in close and wrapping his arms around Jared’s body, their legs knotting together and every inch of skin touching.
“How are you feeling?” Chris asked into Jared’s ear, placing a small kiss on Jared’s temple.
“Don’t call me a girl, but I feel loved,” Jared replied.
“Sleep now Baby,” Chris whispered, realising how tired Jared must be if he was speaking so openly.
“Mmm...” and with that Jared’s breath slowly evened out and the younger man was asleep, Chris following not long after.
...two weeks later...
“I’m here to do a follow up report about the two dogs I brought in two weeks ago,” Jared said handing Dr. Kane the file with all the animals’ details in it.
“Right, Sadie and Harley. They are slowly recovering, they aren’t well enough to be put up for adoption but we were going to see if we can get someone to volunteer looking after them for a few more months since they are going to need more love and care and attention than we can give here,” he said looking through his own paperwork.
Jared nodded and wrote everything down, “I’ll see what I can do,” Jared said before leaving.
Today was just about paperwork and catching up with old cases, a relatively slow day in Jared’s eyes. He wandered into the back room where all the animals rescued were kept and sought out the two brown dogs he had found.
‘Sadie - female, German Sheppard Mix and Harley - male, Mastiff Mix’ read the label on the door of their cage.
“Hey guys,” Jared said, keeping his tone light, sticking two fingers into the cage for the dogs to sniff.
Both the male and the female immediately approached the man, sniffing his fingers before licking them eagerly. “Well isn’t that a nice surprise,” one of the vet nurses said surprising Jared.
Jared pulled his fingers back quickly and stood up to greet the nurse looking embarrassed to have been caught, “What do you mean?” he asked confused.
“Those two haven’t acted that way with anyone here, it usually takes a lot of coaxing to get them even comfortable with one of us for their checkups. They never act that eager with any of the staff here,” she said smiling before leaving Jared alone.
Jared walked back to his desk, deep in thought and carried on with his work half heartedly. The poor dogs needed a proper home and he was going to try to find one for them. He opened his list of contacts and went over it slowly three times before coming to a decision.
Chris was running late, he had an emergency that he had to stay back for but the cat was doing well and that made the extra hours worthwhile. All the lights were on inside the house when Chris opened the door but all was silent.
“Jay?” Chris called out.
“Out back!” Jared replied, obviously outside.
Chris walked out and was knocked down by two large mutts.
“Jared!” Chris scolded.
“You said they needed a home where they would be looked after! What better home than that of two SPCA officials, one of them being a vet?” Jared argued.
“Hey Sadie, Harley, come on, let me up, good dogs!” Chris praised.
“Can we keep ‘em? Can we? Can we?” Jared begged, acting like a five year old, he crouched down and pulled the two dogs either side of him, all of them looking up at Chris.
“God damnit! Now Imma be battling three pairs of puppy dog eyes!” Chris sighed, “Welcome to the family guys!” Chris shrugged, kneeling down and pulling Jared into a kiss, “No more animals though!” he ordered.
“Sure thing boss!” Jared laughed, the two dogs shaking loose of Jared’s hold and jumping over the two men, tackling them to the floor in a heap.
