It all starts because of a bruise. One stupid little bruise.

“How long have you had that bruise for?” His daddy asks him out of the blue one day. And Jared can’t really remember, he just knows it’s been there for a while now.

“Are you sleeping enough?” His momma asks the following day, Jared just nods, saying he’s been sleeping fine, but the bags under his eyes tell a different store. Jared knows he’s not lying though.

Jeff teases him about being so thin, his momma thinks he’s not eating enough, but Maggie teases him about always eating so much.

It’s when he faints that his parents finally decide to take him to the hospital; two weeks after the first bruise appeared and wouldn’t go away.

Jared flicks through the old and outdated magazine, his mom and dad sitting silently on either side of him. He isn’t really reading the words on the page in front of him, he’s too scared to focus really. All he can think about is how he’s only in high-school and how it must be some sort of mistake, some horrible joke. He wishes he had told Chris, Jensen and Steve about the doctor’s appointment so they could all have a laugh over how ridiculous the whole situation is, but now, waiting for the doctor to tell them the news, Jared’s just glad he didn’t tell anyone.

“Jared Padalecki?” a nurse with a kind looking smile calls out.

Jared stands slowly, his momma grabbing his hand and squeezing it in support as his daddy places a hand on his shoulder. Together, they all follow the nurse into the doctor’s office where he had three vials of blood taken from him not even two days ago.

Jared’s scared to death; he’s not really listening anymore as the doctor’s words wash over him over and over again;

“Between the red cells and white, something’s not right.”

“But we’re gonna take care of you.”

“Six chances in ten it won’t come back again with the therapy we’re gonna try.”

“It’s just been approved and it’s the strongest there is”

“I think we’ve caught it in time.”

Jared just closes his eyes. He hears his momma sob, he knows his daddy has tears falling silently, but Jared feels nothing, he’s just in shock. The doctor’s still talking, but all Jared can think about is the dance at the end of the year. He and Chris were going to come out to everyone at the school then. They were going to dance in front of everyone and it was all going to be perfect. He can still picture it he and Chris, his first true love, holding each other close as they go dancing around and around, everything would’ve been perfect. Now Jared’s not so sure. They leave in silence, the appointment already made for his first treatment at the hospital tomorrow morning.

They invite Chris over for dinner that night, his parents knowing how much Jared needed Chris there, and Jared gently breaks the news to him in his room with the door closed. Chris sits silently beside Jared on the bed for what feels like hours, but he soon snaps out of it and replaces his cowboy hat over his head before pulling Jared in close, kissing Jared’s temple and then his hair, whispering words of comfort over and over, promising Jared that he’ll be there. He then simply holds Jared as they both finally cry.

It’s been three weeks since his first treatment, when the poison slowly entered his body. Chris had been there the entire time, along with his parents, Jensen and Steve and his siblings staying as long as they were allowed, supporting Jared in any way they could. Everything had seemed to be going as well as could be hoped, until one morning when everything changed.

Jared woke up early one day, feeling better than normal, only to see large clumps of hair lying there on his pillow, it was the cruellest of any surprise. He cries as he gathers it all in his hands, it was the proof that he couldn’t deny. Jared just closes his eyes, there is no way Chris is going to want to go out with him without his hair, no matter what he said, Jared doubts the other boy will want to be seen with him now.

His momma cries with him when she comes into his room that morning. It’s all too real now, another obvious sign that Jared is sick, with his pasty white skin, the black bags under his puffy red eyes, and now no hair, it’s just out there for everyone to see. Jared thinks he looks worse than he feels, if that were really possible since he constantly feels like crap.

The final dance is only a week away, and while Jared hadn’t been to any of his classes, he was looking forward to this one night where he would be able to feel like a normal teenager once more. The days pass slowly, with Chris too busy with finals to visit but he calls every night, reminding Jared just how much he loves him.

It’s a quarter to seven, the night of the dance, and there’s a knock t the door. Jared’s daddy ushers Chris in and everyone stops and stares. Chris is dressed in a black tux, and when he takes off his cowboy hat, everyone starts to cry, because this morning, where his long hair had been, softly Jared touches just skin.

That night they go dancing, without any cares for his very first true love is holding him close as they go around and around, and for a moment he isn’t scared.

-End.
Lemme know what you think?? :)
