It was another gorgeous Hawaiian day, the sky was a perfect cloudless blue, the sound of waves crashing against the beach heard loud over the sound of children playing in the surf. It was perfect. To most people that was. Danny hated the beach, it was the sand in his underpants, the sunburns and the fact that his hair turned even more blond which to him was reason enough.
Grace, his daughter on the other hand, adored it. Loved the surf and the sand, she was a natural in the water and the more she went on about how Step-Stan was going to take her snorkelling or swimming with the dolphins, the more he wanted, no needed, to take her there himself. He might not have been able to afford taking her swimming with the sharks (and really why would he want to take her to do that!?) but he did have three of the best friends who practically lived on the beach, one who use to be a pro-surfer and the other who was a "Super Seal". By the time they arrived together late in the morning, the beach was already pretty full.
Grace was wearing her brand new pink bikini, much to Danny's annoyance, beach toys in hand rearing to go. She dropped everything as soon as her feet touched the sand about to rush off until Danny stopped.
"Wait right there, Monkey," Danny ordered. He placed the two large beach towels out on the hot sand and looked out towards the water. He spotted Steve and Kono out in the waves surfing, too far out to call for them.
"Danno! I wanna go in already!" She begged.
Danny sighed, unable to resist his young daughter when she used his beloved nickname. "Okay Monkey, but don't go out past your knees... No! Your ankles!" He only half joked.
"Daaad!"
"Okay, okay!" He laughed, "just be careful Monkey!" He added, watching her run off into the surf, splashing around in the shallow water, making friends with some of the other children pretty quickly. Danny sat down on his towel, stripping off his t-shirt (he was not going to get ridiculed by Steve for his clothes today!) allowing the sun to warm his skin. His eyes never left his daughter, refusing to let anything bad happen to her again on his watch.
A while later Kono approached Danny's little area, digging her surfboard into the sand and standing over Danny's body, dripping seawater over him, "hey Brah! Good to see you out here! You ready to hit the surf?" She joked, shaking her hair out over Danny who stretched out and turned away in an attempt to escape the fall.
"Yeah, just let me get my floaties on," he chuckled, not bothering to turn back towards Kono, enjoying the heat against his back.
"Steve is coming in, I'm sure together we can get you in there!" She urged, looking out towards the water.
"Not while Gracie is here," he said.
"Oh! Grace is here?" Kono asked, eyes searching the water, "where?"
At that, Danny bolted upright, his eyes frantically searching the shoreline for his daughter. He jumped up towards the shore, "Gracie!? Monkey? Where are you!?" Danny called out desperately, attracting the attention of many passer-byers.
Steve was closing in on Danny, hearing his calls for his daughter he immediately turned his board around and started searching the water for the little girl that had instantly made it into his heart. It didn't take long before he spotted the long brown hair floating listless in the water. He rushed over and all but yanked the small girl out of the water, holding her on the board, face up, before making his way back to land, working his muscles harder than ever. Danny was frantic, eyes still not seeing his daughter anywhere, he was sure she was gone forever.
"Look! Over there, Steve!" Kono cried, waving Steve over towards them, both Kono and Danny rushing up to meet him in the water.
Steve ignored the father and his friend, his mind set solely on saving the little girl in his arms. As soon as he felt he was close enough, he hopped off his board, leaving it in the water, and rushed up to the shore, holding Grace under her knees and shoulders, not taking any notice of the small crowd making a circle around him.
"Call the lifeguards, get an ambulance here!" Steve ordered to no one in particular.
He lay Grace down on the wet sand, tilted her head up slightly and checked for a pulse and any breath sounds, remotely noting when Danny fell to his knees beside him, begging for his daughter to wake up, for her to be alright.
"No breath sounds, beginning CPR," he said, rubbing the chest over the breastbone, just as he had been trained.
He sealed his lips over Graces and forces in two large breaths, waiting a moment before counting out the thirty quick compressions, all completed with practised ease. He repeated the cycle again, this time being rewarded when Grace's small frame lurched upright and the small girl started coughing up water. Steve turned her onto her side, rubbing her back gently before helping her to lay down again.
"You're okay, you're alright," he reassured gently watching her for any signs of distress before moving over slightly and letting Danny come in closer.
Danny was in shock, he has sat by numbly watching as Steve gave his daughter her life back, unable to really comprehend what was happening and too shocked to move as he watched his little baby girl breathe all on her own again.
"It’s okay, you can hold her," he distantly heard Steve say, the sounds of sirens coming in closer and closer.
"Danno?" Grace near whimpered.
"Oh Gracie!" He finally snapped, all this emotions rushing to the surface at the sound of his nickname, one he'd never thought he'd hear again coming from his little girl's lips, "it’s okay Baby, oh God I was so scared!" He admitted, grabbing his daughter tightly in his arms, one hand burying itself in her long wet hair and the other holding her up supporting her back.
Steve's hand was warm, pressed up against his back, silently supporting him just as he was his daughter, and it was all Danny could have asked for.
"Thank you," he whispered, face burying into Grace's long hair. Steve simply nodded, standing for a moment and talking to the medic who had appeared.
Within moments, Danny and Grace were herded over towards the ambulance, Steve quickly pressing a t-shirt into Danny’s free hand, before being loaded up into the large vehicle, "you'll be there right?" Danny asked, not bothering to hide behind his usual snarkiness or banter this time, still holding onto his weak daughter.
Steve didn't need clarification, he simply nodded and watched as the van door was closed and the van took off. Steve barely gave the time to tell Kono to pack all of their gear before rushing off to his truck, still covered in sand and soaking wet, and making his way to the nearest hospital where Danny and Gracie were being taken, contemplating for just a moment whether or not he should put his own sirens on. He arrived at the hospital, sans sirens, in record time, parking his truck haphazardly and storming the hospital, seeking out the admissions desk for information about his friend.
He was directed towards the paediatrics ward and was immediately off once more, unaware of the stares he was receiving. He searched room by room until he found the one housing Danny and Grace, hesitantly knocking at the door before sticking his head into the room.
Danny looked up, his eyes red from the tears, one of his large hands carefully holding his daughter's, the one without a needle through it. He sat protectively beside his daughter, his eyes watching her still form in case something happened again. Grace was sleeping, breathing mask over her mouth and a monitor connected to her hand recording her pulse. Danny gave a slight nod, giving Steve permission to enter the quiet room.
Steve silently shut the door behind him, walking up to Danny and placing a hand on his now clothed shoulder, "Rachel is coming in a while. She was right, it’s me, I put her in danger, I'm bad for her," Danny spoke before Steve could.
Steve sighed, "that's not true and you know it, you would never purposefully put Grace in danger and Rachel knows that, Grace loves you," Steve rebutted.
Danny sighed, having no energy to argue with his partner at the moment. Steve sat down beside Danny, placing one hand over Grace's slumbering form, his other arm coming up and wrapping itself around Danny's shoulders, holding Danny close to him, "you're okay Bud, everything will work out fine," Steve whispered, his mouth close to Danny's ear.
"Thanks Babe," Danny said, closing his eyes to the world for just one moment and allowing Steve to hold him and help him. Danny refused to admit enjoying the feel of Steve's rough lips against his skin, everything else could wait, for right now he still had his whole family with him.
-End.
Additional author's notes: I did check, even for infacts CPR is 30 compressions! Also this was just a quick fic to get me into writing H50 to see how I could do it, I have a bigger fic planned to fill a prompt but wasn't sure how to write the characters, so lemme know what you think! Any critiques/comments would be greatly appreciated!
