It was the bone rattling cough that awoke him. Chris groaned and rolled over in his bed, his hand seeking out Jared's body, but when it came up empty his eyes immediately sprang open. Jared was no longer in bed, his coughs now obviously far off in another room. Chris side and shook his head, feeling sorry for the younger man who had been dealing with the cough for nearly a week now. Tossing the covers off, Chris got out of bed, dressed only in a loose pair of tracksuit pants, and went in search of his lover.

"Jay?" he called out, eyes slowly adjusting to the dim light. A groan came from the study, music on low could be heard between the coughing fits alerting Chris to where Jared was. "Jared? What are you doing in here?" Chris asked, opening the door and finding Jared curled up in his large desk chair, the old worn leather perfectly moulded to his body from the hours upon hours of lyric and song writing he did in that room.

With the door open, Chris recognized the music as some of his unpublished, rough work, stuff that no one else had heard before, some that he thought no one would ever hear. The poor guy looked like death warmed over, he hadn't been sleeping well the last few nights because of the cough and his whole body was aching from the stress his muscles were under. Chris sighed, making his way over to his boyfriend and moving him over so that he could seat himself down behind Jared, supporting the weight of Jared's tired frame.

"Couldn’t... Couldn't sleep... Didn't want to... Want to wake you... Coughing won’t let me sleep..." he said between coughing bouts.

"Shh... Take it easy, deep breaths, that's it, relax," Chris whispered, trying to comfort and relax Jared, his arms rubbing at Jared's chest and arms. "I got worried when I we up and you weren't there, you know I can't sleep without you by my side anymore," he added, pressing his lips to Jared's slightly warm skin.

"Sorry," he choked out.

"Nothing to be sorry for, just don't do it again, so tell me, why this room and this music?" he asked, one song ending and another starting up.

"I always... come in here... When you're... Not around... And when... I'm missing you...wanted... Wanted to be comforted..."

"But you have me?" Chris questioned, not understanding Jared's answer.

"Didn't want to wake you... You have... Work tomorrow," Jared coughed, his body shaking in Chris' arms before finally sagging against Chris.

"That doesn't matter Jay, you matter to me, not shooting tomorrow, come on, let's go back to bed, you'll be more comfortable there and you might manage some more sleep which you definitely need," Chris said, pushing Jared up and supporting him as they made their way back to the master bedroom.

Back in their bed, Chris arranged himself and the pillows so that he was all but sitting upright in the bed, his body supported by all the pillows. He opened his arms up and beckoned to Jared who immediately collapsed into Chris' open arms, his body turned towards Chris, head nestled into the crook of Chris' neck where he was surrounded by his lover's warmth and scent.

"Thanks babe," Jared whispered, his eyes drooping as he tried to control his cough, not wanting to bother Chris any more than he already was.

"Shh, it's alright, just close your eyes and rest now," Chris said, wrapping his arms around Jared's shoulders and holding him close, their bodies resting against the head of the bed and their breaths in sync.

After a moment of silence, Chris started humming under his breath, some nameless tune, but that wasn't what mattered. The vibrations from Chris' chest soothed Jared, reminding him that Chris was right there with him and allowing him to rest. It took longer than normal, but eventually Jared drifted off to sleep, his breaths evening out and his body finally relaxing completely.

Chris sighed, thankful that Jared had managed to fall asleep. Being careful not to move around too much, Chris picked up his phone from his bedside table and shot off a quick text to the director-of-the-week, informing him that he was feeling sick and wasn't coming into work the next day, before shutting it off and carefully placing it back on the table. Tomorrow they were going to sleep in as long as possible and relax for the rest of the day.

With everything sorted, Chris finally allowed himself to relax into his boyfriend's arms as well, finally allowing himself to fall asleep. Tomorrow they could take it easy, lounge around the house wrapped up together and in each other and doing nothing at all. And hopefully things would only get better from there.
