Summary: Jared's been feeling a bit sick lately, little does he know its nothing to really worry about.
A/N: this was written for all the people who pointed out that my last fic said it was mpreg when it wasn't actually meant to be!
Jared clutched at his stomach, face palling as he groaned because of the queasy feeling in his stomach. He bent over in half, one arm shooting out to brace himself, his knees threatening to buckle. His other hand left his stomach and covered his mouth, bile running up his throat and threatening to escape. He ran from his bedroom to the bathroom, collapsing to his knees as he threw up all his breakfast and the bile. Jared's forehead rested against the cool porcelain, coughing every now and again, as he contemplated getting up and rinsing his mouth out but not having the energy to do so.
Jared had no idea what was going on, he and been feeling nauseous for the past few days, throwing up nearly everything he ate. At first he had thought it was just a bad case of food poisoning, but this couldn't be normal. It took him a few minutes before he rustled up enough energy to move off the floor, he quickly washed his mouth out and slowly made his way back to his bed. He settled down amongst all his pillows, closing his eyes and holding on to his sore stomach once more, thumb gently rubbing the exposed skin.
With closed eyes, Jared fumbled around for his phone that he knew he had left somewhere on his bedside table. He quickly dialled Jensen's number, swallowing several times as the need to throw up arose once more.
"Hey Jay! The car's nearly at yours, you couldn't wait another minute to speak to me could you?" Jensen joked answering the phone quickly.
"Mm... Don't bother, I'm not coming in today," Jared groaned.
"What? Jay? What's wrong? You feeling sick still?" Jensen asked, immediately becoming serious.
"Yeah, I think... I think I need to go see the doc now," Jared mumbled, hating to have to admit how sick he was.
"Do you want me to come with you? Or I could call Chris for you..." Jensen offered.
"No, it's okay, I don't want to bother Chris yet when it could be nothing, and at least one of us needs to go into work today," Jared sighed, he really would have loved to have one of them there with him, but his best friend needed to work, and his boyfriend had to get ready for his performance for that night.
"Only if you're sure, you know that neither of us would mind, especially Chris..." Jensen added.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me, I'm sure it's nothing... Just don't tell Chris what's going on, not yet anyways, I'll keep you posted," Jared pleaded before saying a quick goodbye and hanging up on the other man.
Pulling all his remaining energy together, Jared got back out of bed and ready to go. He didn't know how he was going to make the short drive, but he also didn't want to have to rely on anyone else. With a final sigh, he got into the car, hoping that the nauseous feeling would leave quickly. He made it to the doctors’ office with minimal problems, his stomach only threatening to revolt against him several times. Now signed in and waiting, Jared had time to think about everything that was going on.
Things had been going well in Jared's life. He and Chris were doing really well together, they had just had their one year anniversary three weeks ago and, while they hadn't really had any serious conversations about their future together, their relationship was as good as ever. Sure, with Chris always in Portland and him always in Vancouver, things got a bit tricky at times, but they managed.
"Mr Padalecki?" his doctor, Dr Kaye, called, inviting him into his office. "So, what seems to be the problem?" he asked as he closed the door behind Jared.
"I'm not sure exactly, at first I thought it was a bad case of food poisoning, but now I'm not so sure... I've been throwing up a lot lately and I'm always feeling nauseous, like, even to the point where simply smelling something makes me sick," Jared explained, rubbing his stomach and trying to ease the pain.
"Okay, how long has this been going on for now?" he asked, pulling out his stethoscope and listening to Jared's breath sounds and heart rate.
"About a week now, five or six days I think," Jared replied.
"Hmm... Okay, up on the table please, lift your shirt," the doctor asked, hands pressing around Jared's abdomen feeling for pain and tenderness, "anything hurt? How about when I press here?" he asked as he performed his examination, watching Jared's face for his reactions.
"It's a little tender, but not painful," Jared replied honestly. He hated going to the doctors' office, especially during these examinations, it was embarrassing! Dr Kaye 'hmmed' before helping Jared to sit back up, the younger man pulling his shirt back on before returning to his seat opposite the doctor.
"Well, the good news is I doubt that it is appendicitis, but there are still a number of things it could be... I'm going to order you a full work up, we can draw the blood here and get a urine sample from you which I'll put a rush on so that we'll know by tomorrow what is going on with your body," he explained.
"Okay..." Jared reluctantly agreed, following his doctor to another room where three vials of blood we quickly taken, he then went to the bathroom, and then he was free to go, a small Band-Aid the only evidence that he was ever at the doctors.
Once home, Jared immediately went straight back to bed, trusting either Chris or Jensen to enter the house once they were done for the day. He fell asleep almost instantly, cuddled up against and curled around Chris' pillow, his quilt wrapped up tightly around him.
Chris' day had been hectic. Starting early in the morning he had to scope out the bar and the stage, the place was amazing, however the stagehand was clueless. Chris ended up resetting the stage how he liked, tuning all the guitars and connecting al the instruments, even going so far as having to do all the sound checks on his own. He was exhausted by the end of the day, but the performance tonight he was sure was going to be amazing. Chris packed up his things and decided to return to Jared's place for a quick shower. Jared was meant to still be on set, so he let himself into the house, not expecting the two large dogs to come running straight for him.
"Harley, Sadie! Down, come on guys! What are you even doing in here?" he asked, placating the two dogs with enough pats and equal attention.
Chris dropped his keys by the door and toed off his shoes, the dogs rushing back to the bedroom, looking back at Chris as if asking him why he wasn't following them. He ran his fingers through his hair and made his way towards the dogs, still unsure of why they were even inside. A nervous feeling arose inside of Chris as he pushed the door open, only to find Jared sound asleep in bed, quilt tossed to one side and brow covered in sweat. Chris approached the bed slowly, both dogs already settled down around Jared's body, and sat himself down beside his lover, his hand coming up to push they damn bangs off Jared's head.
"Babe?" Chris whispered, hand cupping the side of Jared's face.
Jared came to slowly, eyes blinking against the harsh afternoon sun. He moaned slightly, his stomach still making him queasy, before twisting around and moving closer to Chris' body, his long limbs latching onto Chris and pulling him in close.
"What's wrong Jay?" Chris asked, becoming even more concerned with Jared's lack of energy.
"'ick..." Jared mumbled, hurrying his face into Chris' side.
"Why didn’t you tell me? Have you been home all day? Have you eaten anything?" Chris asked quickly, his concern mounting.
"I didn't want to worry you, and yeah, I went to the doctor's today, fell asleep as soon as I got home so I haven't eaten anything either," Jared replied, finally pulling away from Chris and trying to sit up.
Chris helped Jared to right himself up, settling him against the pillows to get a better look at his boyfriend. Jared looked pale and tired, large bags under his eyes even though he had just slept most of the day away. He was only with Jared for this week, having arrived only two days ago and Jared having come and visited him last month for a week, and the whole time so far Jared had seemed off.
"What aren't you telling me Jay?" Chris asked, "Do you want me to cancel tonight?" he added.
"No, don't cancel tonight, you have so many people coming to see you and you've been looking forward to this concert for ages, I don't think I'll be able to come, but Jensen will, and so will a bunch of the other people from Supernatural," Jared offered.
"Are you sure babe? Because I don't mind, and I can reschedule it for another night or just give everyone their money back, they'll understand," Chris said.
"No, don't do that. Don't worry about it, I'm going back to the doctor tomorrow, they took a blood test today which should be ready by the afternoon, there's nothing to worry about until then," Jared promised.
"So, what has been going on then? What's wrong and why have you been hiding it from me?" Chris asked, moving around so that he was seated beside Jared, his legs sticking out in front of him, Jared leaning into Chris slightly.
"Not sure, I've uh... Been throwing up a bit, for a few days now... Feeling really nauseous and what not, so I called in sick to work and went just in case," Jared explained, burying his head into Chris' neck the smell of Chris' sandalwood aftershave overpowering his senses.
The smell hit him in hard, one minute he was relaxing beside his lover, and the next he was running to the bathroom. Jared bent over the toilet, thankful to have made it in time to empty what little there was left in his stomach. His stomach twisted painfully as he coughed up everything he had, he vaguely felt Chris come up behind him, his large hand rubbing along his back as he continued to be sick. Once he thought he was done, his vomiting turning into dry retching, he leaned back against Chris, letting the other man support his weight.
"Are you sure you're okay babe? Maybe I should take you to the hospital?" he asked, worry evident in his voice, as he carded his fingers through Jared's long and damp hair.
"We'll wait until tomorrow, after the doctor's appointment," Jared whispered, too tired to do much else.
"Let's get you cleaned up a bit, then it's straight back to bed for ya, I'll see if Jensen can come and keep an eye on you while I preform, but I'll make it an early night and be back before you know it!" Chris said, mostly to himself, at this point not caring what Jared had to say about any of this.
"No Chris, I'll be fine, I don't need Jen to come and watch over me!" Jared pleaded.
"You get no say in the matter, not this time, I'm sorry," Chris denied.
Chris helped Jared to stand, holding him steady as he brushed his teeth again. In the meantime, Chris opened his phone and quickly dialled Jensen's number, informing his friend of exactly what was going on. Jensen quickly promised to be there soon, hanging up soon after.
"Jen is on his way, now come on, back to bed with you," Chris said leading Jared back to the bedroom. Chris easily settled Jared back into the big bed, pillows surrounding him and quilt pulled back up high. "You rest now, I have to get ready, but Jen should be here soon and he can let himself in, so you just relax, try and get some more sleep or something," Chris said, moving back to the bathroom to shower.
Jared tried to protest, but exhaustion won over and within moments the young man was fast asleep. Jensen arrived soon after, as promised, and stayed until Chris' set finished, watching Jared as he slept and playing with Harley and Sadie to pass the time. Chris returned home just before midnight, tossing everything aside and quickly making his way to Jared.
"How's he been?" Chris whispered, sitting on the bed, much like he had earlier in the day, his fingers immediately burying themselves back into Jared's hair.
"Slept the whole time, he looks exhausted. I know he said he was sick, but is he really okay?" Jensen asked, getting ready to leave.
"I don't know, I guess we'll see tomorrow after the doctor's appointment, I'm gonna go with him this time, I know he won't admit it, but I think he kinda hates the place," Chris said, eyes never leaving Jared's slumbering form.
"Get some sleep yourself man, we'll talk more tomorrow, about your gig and Jared..." Jensen said leaving the two men alone and letting himself out.
Chris sighed, he quickly stripped down to his boxers and slipped in between the covers, wrapping himself around Jared's body and promptly falling asleep. Waking up the next morning, Chris felt like he hadn't slept a wink. His dreams had been plagued with images of Jared being sick and dying in his arms and his sleep restless. Jared hadn't fared much better, he felt too warm in his bed and tossed and turned most of the night, trying not to disturb Chris.
“Morning Babe,” Chris mumbled, turning over and capturing Jared’s lips with his own in a quick kiss.
“Good-” Jared started once they broke apart only to bolt towards the bathroom.
Chris cringed at the sound of Jared retching in the other room, hating having to hear and see his partner in pain. He followed Jared and crouched down behind him, rubbing his back and holding his hair off his face, mumbling reassurances as he waited for it to end.
“You good now?” Chris asked when Jared leant back against him, completely exhausted.
“I'm okay…” Jared mumbled, hiding his face in Chris’ neck, trying to control his urge to throw up.
“Okay, come on, let’s get you ready, time to get you to the doctor’s,” Chris said, helping Jared up.
Chris got himself and Jared cleaned and ready to leave, pushing Jared into the passenger’s seat and driving them to the doctor’s office within the hour. It didn’t take long for Jared to be called into the private room, Chris following him in silently.
“Good morning Jared, how are you feeling today?” Dr Kaye asked, sitting down across from Jared and flicking through some pages on his clipboard.
“I was sick again this morning, stomach is still really queasy… I’ve also been really tired lately even though I’ve been sleeping just as much, if not more, than usual,” Jared answered, looking at Chris, hating having to admit his weaknesses in front of him.
Dr Kaye nodded his head, looking towards Chris, “Good morning, I don’t think we’ve met before,” he said, holding his hand out “My name is Dr Kaye.”
“Christian Kane, Jared’s…” Chris started, accepting the doctor’s hand.
“He’s my partner,” Jared spoke up, knowing Chris’ hesitation was because they hadn’t really admitted their relationship to anyone other than close friends and family. He laced his fingers through Chris’, holding on tight.
“Oh, very good then, I guess you don’t mind me sharing the news in front of him then?” he asked. Jared nodded hesitantly, not sure if even he wanted to hear the news. “Well, Jared, there’s nothing to worry about, because as it turns out, you and your partner are now expecting!” he said, quiet excited, expecting the same level of excitement from the two new parents.
“Wait… What? How is that… No, I can’t be! Are you sure? No…” Jared questioned frantically, snatching his hand away from Chris and wrapping his arms around his stomach.
“From your test results, yes. Is there a problem here?” Dr Kaye asked, a small frown appearing on his face.
“We… this isn’t planned, no, we can’t, not now…” Jared replied shaking his head furiously. “I’m sorry Chris, shit… no…” he said over and over.
“Can I have a minute here?” Chris asked, finally speaking up.
“Sure, I’ll be back in a little while with more information of where we can go from here…” he said leaving the room.
To say that Chris was shocked was an understatement. For a moment he thought he had heard the doctor wrong or that this was all some kind of joke, but once he realised the doctor was being serious, Chris actually became kind of excited. He came out of his own thoughts and worries when he saw how freaked out Jared was, immediately falling to his knees in front of Jared and grabbing at his hands, pulling them together.
“It’s okay, babe, this is great news isn’t it?” Chris asked, forcing Jared to focus on him. “What's wrong? Why are you freaking out?” he asked when Jared made no move to respond.
Jared was still lost in his own mind. He thought for sure now that Chris would leave him, Chris wasn’t the sort of person to settle down, he wouldn’t want children, they hadn’t even spoken about moving in together or marriage, let alone children. They had only been together for a year! Why would they have needed to start talking about all that already anyway? His mind was all over the place with concerns.
“Gonna leave… he’s gonna go…” Jared mumbled over and over again.
“Whoa! No Jared! Stop! Stop it!” Chris ordered, voice rising in volume, his hands coming up and grabbing at either side of Jared’s head.
Chris pulled Jared down towards him, forcing his lips to Jared’s before cradling the younger man’s head against his chest. He carded his fingers through Jared’s hair, quietly mumbling reassurances and placing small kisses over his head. He honestly couldn’t understand why Jared was freaking out so much, he knew they hadn’t spoken about any of this, but surely they were in this for the long haul by now.
“Jared, look at me, babe please,” Chris begged, pulling away from Jared slightly so that their eyes could meet.
“Chris?” Jared whispered, “Please…” he didn’t know what he was begging for, but he just needed his boyfriend to reassure him.
“Jared, listen to me and listen carefully,” Chris started, making sure Jared was looking at him and focusing on him, “I swear to you, I’m not going anywhere, in fact, this right here -” he said placing his hand on Jared’s stomach, “- is a miracle, one I couldn’t be happier for, I assume he or she is mine right?” Chris asked all of a sudden, worried for a moment that the reason Jared was freaking out was because the baby wasn’t his.
“Of course,” Jared nodded, eyes glistening with unshed tears.
“Well then babe, you have nothing to worry about, I'm not going anywhere,” Chris promised. “It will take a bit of work, but we’ll get through this together, and it will be great,” he added.
“Promise?”
“I promise,” Chris nodded, smiling in relief as Jared collapsed into his arms, holding onto him tightly. Chris pulled Jared up with him so they were both standing, his hand coming up and cupping the side of Jared’s face, “I know I probably don’t say this often enough, but I love you, so much,” Chris said, his own eyes becoming moist with tears.
“I love you too,” Jared replied, leaning down and capturing Chris’ lips with his own, “we’re going to have a baby!” he added, finally sounding excited, pressing his forehead against Chris’ to keep them close.
