One drink turned into two, then two into three, and then three to shots. It was another end of the week, ‘we-survived-the-week’ celebration and Danny was letting loose. He didn’t have Grace this weekend and Kono was paying. He easily downed another shot that was placed before him, chasing it with a Longboard he was nursing.
Steve had been keeping a close eye on his partner, watching the other man down one shot after another. He had sent a silent look towards Kono, warning her to stop buying the man more drinks, but the look went unnoticed. He knew Danny enjoyed a good drink, could handle himself while drinking, but watching his partner stumble towards the bathroom and nearly topple over onto some other guy was the last straw.
Danny was grabbed as he exited the bathrooms, a moment of panic rising in him, knowing that he was a little bit too intoxicated to defend himself. The panic soon left, however, when he turned around to see it was only his Neanderthal of a partner who had a hold of him. Shrugging Steve off, Danny made his way precariously back to the table where Kono was, eyeing the fresh shots she had just ordered hungrily.
“Danno… Danny! No, stop it,” Steve all but ordered, following Danny through the thick crowd of people.
“Lemme alone,” Danny grumbled in return, not slowing down even as Steve tried to grab at him again.
“You’ve had enough, come on,” Steve urged, meeting Danny at the table, watching him quickly down another shot of god knows what.
“You’re not my mother, Steve,” he hiccupped, placing his hand on Steve’s chest to stop the other man, laughing to himself as he ran his hand down against the hard muscle, settling it over Steve’s hip. “And thank god for that!” he added.
“Alright Danno, let’s get you home,” Steve mumbled, ignoring the inebriated man’s words and touches.
“Nah, not yet! Come on, let go a bit! Come dance with me!” Danny spoke, eyes shining with excitement at the thought as he tried to pull Steve towards the small dance floor.
“Steve don’t dance,” He chuckled, attempting to shrug Danny’s hands off of him, but the man was persistent.
Danny’s face turned into a pout. Turning so that he was completely facing Steve, he grabbed the man on either side and pulled him in close, swaying their bodies together in time with the music that was being played.
“See, Steve can dance!” Danny smiled, hands roaming up and down the smooth plains of Steve’s broad back, pulling Steve impossibly closer.
“Danny, no,” Steve pleaded, bringing Danny’s hands around so they were cupped in his “I really think we should start heading home now, babe,” Steve asked, trying his best not to do anything stupid to the man leaning in so close to him.
Steve dropped one of Danny’s hands, still holding the other as he lead the man out of the bar, nodding a quick ‘goodbye’ to Kono as they went. Danny half-heartedly tried to free himself from Steve’s grip but mostly allowed himself to be lead to Steve’s truck. Steve sighed, wishing they had brought the Camaro instead of his truck as he opened his door and ushered Danny in, struggling to get the other man settled in and belted up.
Once that was done, Steve rushed around and got behind the wheel, closing his eyes and steeling himself as Danny dropped his head on Steve’s shoulder.
“You’re too good to me Babe,” Danny mumbled, burying his face in the crook of Steve’s neck. “Smell good too,” he added breathing in deep and letting it out slowly, his breath tickling the sensitive skin it brushed against.
Steve ignored Danny, leaving his partner where he lay against him, trying to think of anything but the way Danny felt so good resting against him, how his hand lay heavy against his thigh.
He started up the truck and allowed the music to fill the air, hoping that it would get him home with some of his sanity still intact.
“Oh I love this song!” Danny cheered, suddenly wide awake again as the opening notes to a new song started. Danny started jumping around in his seat, attempting to dance and sing along to the chorus poorly; “But if I ha’ you, tha’ would be the only thing I'd ever need! Yeah! If I ha’ you, then money, fame and fortune never could compete! If I had you, life would be a party it'd be ecstasy! Yeah, if I had you!” he sung.
Steve tried to ignore his partner, not reading more into the words Danny was singing than needed. He gritted his teeth as Danny continued to sing along to the cheesy song, focusing on getting the two of them home and into bed so that Danny could sleep off the alcohol in his system and get back to his normal ways.
Finally pulling into his driveway after two other songs, Steve jumped straight out of his car and manhandled Danny to the front door, struggling to keep Danny's hands off him.
“Come on D. help me out here,” Steve sighed, wrestling Danny through the door after disarming his alarm.
Danny’s body slumped against Steve’s, arms wrapping around the taller man's waist as he buried his head into Steve's chest. “’m tired,” Danny mumbled, breath ghosting over Steve's neck as he looked up to meet Steve's gaze, “howdja get such loooong eyelashes?” Danny questioned, but Steve once again ignoring the drunk man as he lead him upstairs.
Steve had been trained to resist many things during his time in the military, all different kinds of torture, but nothing compared to the torture he was going through, having Danny so close to him and touching him so much when he knew that he couldn't and wouldn't do anything in return. He had fallen in love with Danny from the first time he saw him, a loud mouth Jersey cop who wouldn't take anyone's shit for nothing and could hold his own alongside him.
His affection for the cop grew when he saw him interact with his daughter, but that banished all hope for the two of them in Steve’s mind. Danny was obviously still in love with his ex-wife and still obviously straight. The way he was acting tonight however, clinging to him and saying all the things he was, it brought back a small flicker of hope. It was so very small however, since the man was obviously completely drunk and would most likely not even remember anything in the morning, at least Steve hoped so, for the sake of them both. Steve knew that even if he acted upon anything Danny tried to initiate tonight, their friendship and partnership would be ruined, and that was something he would never risk.
Steve forced two pills and a whole bottle of water down Danny's throat, hoping to lessen the risk of the killer hangover Steve was expecting Danny to get in the morning. After managing that, Steve steered Danny towards the stairs, “off to bed with you, partner,” he said.
Steve deposited Danny on his bed and knelt down to remove the expensive shoes his partner wore. He was tempted to remove Danny's dress shirt and pants, but thought better of it, leaving him where he lay, already snoring. Steve looked at his partner fondly, smoothing back Danny's hair, then quickly backed away from the slumbering man and exited his bedroom, switching off the light and partially closing the door as he left. He leant against the wall opposite his bedroom door and took a moment to centre himself, breathing in deep and regaining control over the urge he had to run back in there and kiss his partner.
With a sigh, Steve left the support of the wall and slowly made his way back downstairs to lock up for the night. After doing so, he settled down on his couch, shuffling around slightly until he was comfortable and promptly fell asleep, incredibly glad that his days in the Navy had helped him learn how to sleep almost anywhere.
Steve sprung awake, what could have been only a couple of hours later, to a heavy weight settling over his body, his arms immediately coming up to grab a hold of the thing. He cursed himself silently for not having woken up until now, not understanding how Danny could have been so quiet making his way all the way downstairs and not waking him up until he was directly on top of him.
“Uh... Danno? What are you doing?” Steve questioned in a mere whisper.
Danny still had his eyes closed, wrapping his arms around Steve's neck, forcing them underneath the man before speaking, “was lonely all alone,” he mumbled, as if it made all the sense in the world.
“Come on big guy, let's get you back into bed, where you'll be more comfortable,” Steve suggested, honestly not wanting to move, loving the feeling of Danny settled over him, needing him and being so close.
Danny mumbled something unintelligible, whining slightly when Steve forced him up. Once again, Steve lead a still very drunk Danny back upstairs to his bedroom, but this time helped the man under his covers, smiling as Danny immediately curled around the pillow he mainly used. Steve was about to leave the man again when Danny spoke up.
“Stay? It’s lonely here, bed's too big or sumfin,” he said into the pillow, breathing in deep as he spoke.
Steve hesitated, not wanting to take advantage of his partner in any way. He shrugged when Danny sent him a pathetic look, all but begging Steve to stay with him.
“Okay, okay,” Steve relented, settling above the covers and as far away from Danny as possible on the large bed. “Get some rest now, babe,” he said. Danny's snoring, once again, his only response.
Steve awoke very early the next morning, as per usual, only to find himself completely covered by a still slumbering Danny. Steve froze, unsure of what to do, worried that if he tried to move Danny would wake up but, at the same time, not wanting to have Danny wake up on his own still like this. As carefully and slowly as he could, Steve extracted himself from Danny's grasp, holding his breath the entire time and slowly wriggling out until he thought he was home free.
“Mm... Fuck,” Steve heard from behind him, whipping around and seeing Danny still lying as he was, just with his head cradled in his hand.
“What happened last night?” Danny questioned, his mouth tasting foul and what felt like his brain banging against his skull in a desperate attempt to free itself.
“Uh... How are you feeling? Let me get you some water and painkillers man,” Steve said, instead of answering the question.
Steve rushed off at Danny's feeble nod, hoping against hope that Danny didn't think he tried something last night, even though logically, Steve knew that Danny would realize they were both fully dressed thus nothing could have possibly happened. Steve returned to see Danny now sitting up, face buried in both his palms in a poor attempt to ward off any light and to tame his pounding head.
“Here babe, take these,” Steve whispered, handing over the pills and bottle of water.
“Thanks,” Danny ground out, quickly downing the medication and more than half the bottle before rolling back over and burying his head back into Steve's pillow.
“I'll... Uhh... Just leave you to rest some more, I'm going for a swim,” Steve hesitantly spoke, unsure if Danny was awake or not.
“Go, enjoy your marathon in the ocean while I lay here to die,” Danny grumbled, raising his arm up and waving his hand in a dismissive manner.
“Do you-” Steve started.
“Just go already, I'll survive, ain't the first time,” Danny interrupted.
Steve hurried off, thankful for the dismissal. He took his time in the water, cutting through the it with practiced and skilled strokes he allowed the water to wash away all his fears and concerns. It was the same routine as every morning. After what was at least an hour in the ocean, Steve emerged feeling refreshed, the salt water clinging to his skin before evaporating in the morning heat, leaving his body glistening. Steve looked towards his lanai and saw Danny sitting on one of the chairs, the one that wasn’t occupied by his towel, obviously waiting for him and watching him.
“How are you feeling?” Steve asked awkwardly as he approached, grabbing his towel and patting himself down.
“Been better, thanks for taking care of my ass last night, I know I must have made a complete fool out of myself… I hope I didn’t do anything too stupid…” Danny said.
Steve shrugged, dismissing the entire thing, thankful for the fact that Danny didn’t remember anything from the previous night. He sat down beside Danny, both men lost in their own thoughts, staring out onto the ocean. Danny soon broke the easy silence that had fallen over them.
“I’m sorry for the way I acted with you last night. I hope it doesn’t change anything between us…” Danny mumbled.
“What do you mean?” Steve asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
“Just… well you know, the way I was all over you, I understand that you don’t feel the same way about me or anything, but I really hope that it won’t affect our partnership or friendship…”
“You remember last night?” Steve gulped, not meeting Danny’s gaze.
“Well…”
“So you're saying that you..?” Steve started.
“I’ve got some weird, misguided feelings for you that I’m trying to get over, I promise, it doesn’t mean anything!” Danny all but begged.
“What if I want them to mean something?” Steve questioned, still not facing the other man.
“Steven, now is not the time to joke around with me, I know you're not interested, you made that perfectly clear last night each time you pushed me away…”
“When I pushed you away? Danny, you were drunk, I was not going let anything happen between us while you were in that state!” Steve argued.
“Oh…”
“Oh? Have I stunned you to silence? Someone alert the media, or what am I meant to do? Record the time and date, because this is the first time you have ever been unable to say anything!” Steve said, mocking Danny’s own words from so long ago.
“Ha ha funny man, seriously though Steve… What are you trying to say?” Danny asked.
“Babe, I’ve had the same weird and misguided feelings towards you as you have for me it seems, I have no clue why, I mean, you're loud, you hate Hawaii and everything to do with it, but I can’t stop thinking about you…” Steve admitted.
“Oh thank God!” Danny sighed. Steve smirked, feeling the exact same relief Danny was.
“Especially since ‘if I had you, that would be the only thing I'd ever need’,” Steve added, trying to control his laughter as Danny’s face turned scarlet.
