They stop, from time to time, at port towns, to pick up supplies and “sample the local fare,” as the men say to her as they snicker. She ignores them and instead thinks of how strange it feels to have solid ground beneath her feet again, and to see buildings and finely dressed women. She’s so used to dirt under her nails and salt in her hair that to see a world besides the one she lives in startles her every time.

It also startles her into remembering.

She remembers the laughter of Annabelle, her wobbly baby feet pattering after her as they raced around the dining room table. She remembers the soft scent of Mother’s perfume as she brushed her hair. She remembers the rough cotton of Jonathan’s sailor uniform as he hugged her one final time before leaving her forever.

She remembers the life she used to have, in a town just like this one.

All towns remind her. All cities are the same.

She left something behind (Annabelle, Mother, Father as he kisses her goodnight), but she knows that out there, on the sea, she has something more to gain.
