31_days] A little back story!
It’s one of her favorite stories to hear him tell, and she remembers it better than he with every telling, it seems.
He found her hiding behind a barrel of ale, scrawny arms folded over scrawny legs, a strip of dried meat hanging from her mouth as her wide gray eyes stared up at him in surprise. She was dirty and wiry and a little girl.
They stared at each other (and it’s here in the story that he opens one eye wide to stare at her beadily) before, quick as a hawk, she pulled out a little pocket knife and flashed it at him.
“And that,” he says, throwing a wink her way, “is when I started laughing!”
And not only did he laugh, but he roared. He picked her up by the scruff of her neck, still chuckling, and said, “You shouldn’t mess with the captain of a ship, child!”
And that child, with an impish smile on her lips, hasn’t stopped messing with him since.
