It would be interesting to hear more about how you get to know a musical artist-- do you first hear a few tracks, then get an album and listen to the whole thing in order or do you jump around? How many listens to a particular song or artist do you give before deciding?

The statement in your entry about "getting to know" the Kinks sparked these questions in me.

Well, first I hear a song I like... often on NPR's All Songs Considered, or on Pittsburgh's really great public radio station WYEP http://www.wyep.org/, or in random places... like a cafe, or watching a movie (as with The Kinks, or with Sun Kill Moon), or I hear about a band from a friend. THEN, if I like a song enough, I look em up. I go to myspace pages, or just Amazon or i-tunes and listen to samples. If they are consistently good, I get the album. Then, I listen to it over and over and over. With vinyl records, I don't like to lift the needle in the middle of a record so I let it play all the way through. On my ipod or on a CD, I might repeat a favorite song over and over and over. I get pretty obsessed.
