La-la land

For the first time in my life, I'm proud to have been born and raised in Los Angeles:

Immigration issue roiling both sides of debate: LAPD estimates 500,000 at protest

500,000 people against the right-wing, xenophobic anti-immigrant laws!

That's really amazing, surprising and encouraging. Two close friends have been making a documentary on Mexican migrant workers in the midwest focusing on a group from one small town, which has entailed involvement in many aspects of their lives and an education for me. NAFTA seems to have been one of the main reasons for a wave after 94. Life in the US not only means hard and undependable work and long periods away from families, but also continual police harassment. The separation of living circumstances has a tendency toward lack of sympathy built into it, so to see so many protesting those laws is remarkable.

And the 1/2 million was the LAPD count.
