Fluteworld is currently selling my flute for over 50% off. Meaning that if I were buying a new flute now, I could get my current one for half off or get another much more expensive flute for about the same price. Grr ( Read more... )

Heh. Yeah, I remember reading that sort of thing about AIS. Gender/sexuality stuff is just screwy. That's my professional opinion. :P

How did you find an internship? They always sounded like a good idea to me, but I've never been able to find them... -_-;;; Although, honestly, my famly would probably not have been happy if I came home and then told them I was off to another city for the summer.

I am an erecruiting whore. Ahh, and www.idealist.org. It's become quite a useful waste of time.

Yeah, and this Abnormal book is screwy, too. It's kind of depressing, since one of the authors is a pretty prominent psychology researcher, that it can make the kind of sweeping generalizations, misleading statements, and sometimes just arrogant lack of understanding of the topic that it does. And it's boring. How the hell do you make abnormal psych boring?

Eh. Yeah, I would have thought that abnormal would be fascinating. Although, it does seem like it would be an area prone to generalizations--just because the label of "abnormal" itself is totally arbitrary based on perceived historical constructions of "normality." To my mind being "abnormal" isn't necessarily so. It probably just means that historically a certain way of being became perceived as being less socially desirable. Dude, did you know pedophilia is technically not a mental disorder unless it is acted on? And, technically, mental disorders are only states of being which distress the individual in question. So, by that definition, pedophilia really shouldn't be considered a mental disorder unless it bothers the pedophile. But it is anyway. The Diagnostic Statistics Manual (or whatever... the big psych book) makes a specific statement that regardless of the fact that pedophilia doesn't match the definition of mental disorder, it is one anyway. Also, at least in the 1980s, the "beater" as opposed to the "beaten" in ( ... )

I'll give you the eRecruiting site too, it's a little more comprehensive: http://wm.erecruiting.com/er/security/login.jsp

I think the requirement isn't just that it necessarily be disturbing to the person with the paraphilia, but that it gets in the way of relationships, is harmful to someone, etc...I don't know, it's all very vague. I think in some cases--pedophilia, etc--it's great to socially condemn it and consider it abnormal. With stuff like fetishes, it doesn't seem like it should be a problem as long as it doesn't bother the person or whoever they're in a relationship with, which is pretty much how it ends up anyway, because why would you seek treatment for something you and your partner are both happy about? But then there's oh, homosexuality, and how that was considered a disorder in the DSM up until 1973. Which is...not so great.
