6 o’clock in the morning, the sky was still dark out there -it’s winter, when the nights are longer than days-- and Chanyeol had woken up drenched in sweat, eyes wide open with horror because of the same nightmare he had had for a week. Well, maybe not exactly the same because there are some parts which got worse in every night’s pass. But Chanyeol didn’t care anyway because the storyline resemble one another and it’s so real he couldn’t get back to sleep anymore.

He rubbed his temple with his sweaty palm. It must be the goddamned heather, he said in his mind as he tossed the pile of comforter in the direction of, again, Sleeping Baekhyun’s frame. That one particular person was always fond of those things; warm temperature, comforters, fluffy blankets, quilts, et cetera. Whether it’s when he’s awake or asleep, Baekhyun always loves to nuzzle into the softness, praising God while the warmness spreads across his skin. Chanyeol watched as Baekhyun stirred very, very slightly, murmuring something under his breath when he took an armful of Chanyeol’s sweat-soaked comforter.

When Chanyeol was sure that Baekhyun was still sleeping, he climbed out of the bed before walking out of the room. Sparing glance to the unusually peaceful crib, Chanyeol felt that his nightmare suddenly popped out into his mind, replaying the scenes (too bad that it was the scariest part) that Chanyeol almost shriek in horror. Hands as cold as frozen meat, he continued his journey to the bathroom -maybe a splash of water will help to relieve his tense muscles.

-----

The dream’s beginning was pretty good, Chanyeol reckoned. It’s like something from a movie, the scene where a family is having a small picnic outdoor. He was chatting with Baekhyun while eating meals, baby Jongin crawling all over the picnic mat with small limbs knocking all things he come across. Baekhyun always laugh every time Jongin makes something tumble over before fixing them back, which is a pretty fruitless action because the little toddler will knock them down again in less than five minutes later. It’s like a cliché scene from a soap, or maybe a romantic drama, but Chanyeol didn’t care (even though he actually flinches when Baekhyun tells him something related to cheesy-romantic-aww-that’s-so-sweet things.).

Everything seems to work well until Baekhyun, who was watching Jongin’s movement, tilts his head up to face Chanyeol with glowing eyes and bright smile, something that only happens whenever he has a very-very-good-idea. “Chanyeol,” he said, and Chanyeol will look back at Baekhyun with questioning stare.

“Let’s adopt another baby, shall we? I think our little Jonginnie is feeling a bit lonely.”

After that, Jongin, whom sitting quietly on Baekhyun’s lap, suddenly showed his true identity as the evil spirit’s spawn. It is the part which grow worse and scarier.

The first day, Jongin grows a tiny-black batwings and Chanyeol said to himself that it was a part of Jongin’s outfit, thanks to Baekhyun’s weird taste of clothes.

Then, the next day, Jongin has something looked like a cat’s tail, black and long, whipping fiercely to Chanyeol’s direction.

On the third day, Jongin got two fangs (which is a bit weird because he still hasn’t grow any teeth, but still, it’s scary).

There were a pair of bat-like ears growing from his head on the fourth day, followed by two small devilish horns on the next day.

Jongin had a small trident in his tiny hand on the sixth day which will be used to stab Chanyeol on the seventh day, and that was the cause of his sweat this morning.

Even though it was small, the trident was really sharp Chanyeol could almost feel it on his skin.

“Yeollie, could you please hold Jongin for a sec---“

“No! I don’t want to! Put him away from me!” Chanyeol screamed on the top of his lung. Baekhyun stopped on his heels, looks of disbelief on his eyes. “W-what?”

Chanyeol almost mentally slapped himself for screaming like a lunatic he actually is. So he quickly corrected his words by saying “Wait, give me some time to wash my hand, I was just kidding about the screaming thing.” before groggily putting his hand around the small boy’s waist. “There, there. Hang on with Yeollie-appa for a while, okay? You better befriend each other before I came back from the kitchen, got it, guys?” Baekhyun flashed a smile to Jongin and Chanyeol. The latter couldn’t help but smile all along while Jongin played with his rattle, shaking it everywhere and accidentally hit Chanyeol hard on his head.

“Ouch!” the squeal Chanyeol let out sounds exactly like a girl’s voice. “Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch! Jongin-ah could you please have a hold on yourself--- BAEKHYUN!”

Baby Kim had found a new interest that day. Chanyeol concluded that Jongin must be the son of the evil spirit just because of Jongin’s new hobby (that is very dangerous for him, Chanyeol stated) and his slightly tanner skin. Oh, don’t forget that almost-evil-in-some-way smile that little boy gave him while he was clinging like a koala onto his beloved Baekhyun’s shoulder, leaving Chanyeol with small icepack on his bruised head.

“Devil, devil, devil…”

With his trademark hipster glasses, Chanyeol scanned through the subjects of the books in his university’s library. He found some titles when he searched across the title database, though, but later decided not to check on the books because they have ‘Fiction’ genre typed clearly under the book’s details.

“Maybe I should try another keyword?” he groaned in front of the database computer. Any other words related to devil? Satan? Evil spirit? Alien? Devils came from different dimension from humans, right?

Later the afternoon he was convinced by himself that the university’s library doesn’t have a complete book collection. Then, where should he search for a book -or any literature-- which could help his research about the probability to accidentally adopting Satan’s child? It would make a great thesis title, anyway. ‘How to know that Your Adoptive Child is one of the Evil’s Spawn’ sounds really good he could almost see the big, red, A+ mark on his essay.

When he said his idea out loud to Kris -who certainly is one example of the devil’s minions--, the said person scrunched the tip of his nose quickly. “Now you’re telling me that that small, disgusting baby-“

“He has a name, you know. Jongin.”

“Whatever. So, you’re telling me that this Jong-blah kid you guys adopted some time ago is… possibly not a creature from this dimension or something like that? Whoa.” the blonde guy narrowed his eyes on Chanyeol who was slicing up his sandwich to pieces. “I think you’re the one who comes from the outer space. Hello, visitor.”

“Why, thank you.” Chanyeol said, eating his sandwiches calmly. “How kind of you, as one of the devil’s minions, to say something like that. Should I feel honored?”

Kris snorted and decided to ignore Chanyeol for the entire day.

Chanyeol went home with no progress on his research but he refused to turn it down.

Chanyeol get a work shift change today, so he could went home earlier than usual.

He had informed Baekhyun about it and Baekhyun asked him to pick Jongin up at the daycare, along with a short list of needs that Chanyeol has to buy on the convenience store the way home. Usually it’s Baekhyun who pick Jongin up since his part-time job finishes much earlier than Chanyeol, but today’s case is a bit special.

“Where’s Mr. Byun?” the person from the daycare spared Chanyeol suspicious stare as he said that he came to get Jongin. “Busy with work. You might want to call him to verify, maybe? And the name’s Park Chanyeol, anyway.” Chanyeol answered, fingers playing around black locks atop Jongin’s small head. He suddenly remembered that Jongin is supposed to be his enemy so he quickly draws his hand out of Jongin’s hair. Some minutes later, the daycare-person came back with a frown and gave a checkmark on something looked like an attendance book before telling Chanyeol that he could take Jongin home.

He walked along the sidewalk with Jongin clinging to his shoulder in front of his chest, his backpack on his back and while he was busily fumbling with the note Baekhyun gave him earlier. “How could you be so heavy?” he grumbled. Jongin didn’t care anyway, he was too busy staring at the street and watching vehicles passed by.

They stopped in front of an old bookstore. Chanyeol fixed Jongin’s position feeling that Jongin almost fell out of his hold, cursing for a moment before his glance met an interesting book. It was black, a bit thick, rune-like symbol scattered all over the cover, with title written in big, clear white font in contrast of the background. Chanyeol read the title once more -to make sure that he didn’t misread anything-- but it’s true that the book was titled “Signs of a Relation with the Devil”, with small subtitle “Make sure your child isn’t one”.

Why not giving this one a try? Maybe… just maybe, he will found something he needs here?

-----

Chanyeol came back home with Jongin, a paper bag full of Baekhyun’s order and a fresh-and-still-sealed copy of the Signs of a Relation with the Devil. He hurriedly place the paper bag on the kitchen, settled Jongin in his crib before proceeding to lock himself in the bathroom to have a quiet time to read the book.

Short story short, he reached the end of the book in less than two hours -which was surprisingly fast for him-- and he had took the lesson. He knew the conclusion after reading through the page thoroughly, after some minute of ask-and-answer question with himself. He knew it! Now he’s sure that the seemingly-cute and innocent Jongin is actually… add some dramatic effect over there, Chanyeol mentally said…

Jongin is, indeed, the devil’s son. This surely explains why Jongin is… Jongin. And also the dark aura surrounding him.

Now all the work left is to tell Baekhyun and convince him that he’s correct, then, if everything works well, he could ask Baekhyun to abandon Jongin. After that, finally he could have Baekhyun all for himself again! No more preferring Jongin over Chanyeol, no more disturbing cries at night, and there will be no evil spirit surrounding them anymore! Their place will be back to the peaceful state once again, all thanks to The Great Chanyeol.

Chanyeol silently cackles as he closed the book and went out of the bathroom. The air outside was really fresh, Chanyeol called it as the taste of freedom, but it really was because of the bathroom’s damp air.

-----

Jongin was still sleeping when Baekhyun came home. Chanyeol jumped anxiously when he heard the doorknob turned and he practically slammed his lover’s back to the wall, completed by a series “Baekhyun Baekhyun Baekhyun!” scream rapped out of his mouth.

“Ugh.” Baekhyun whimpered. “What is it, Chanyeol?”

The taller man decided to give a try on a serious expression. “Listen, Baekhyun. I recently found something interesting.” he said convincingly. Baekhyun rolled his eyes, tired enough to hear another weird theory Chanyeol always tells him. “It’s better not something about puppies, or buffalos, or the outer space or anything because I’m not in the mood at all.” the shorter huffed.

“It is not. Well… it’s about Jongin,” Chanyeol paused for a while for the sake of extra dramatic feel. When he knew that he failed to raise the tension, he scoffed and decided to tell Baekhyun straightforwardly. “Jongin is a devil. A small one, to be exact. And we have to get rid of him as soon as possible.”

-----

This is not how Chanyeol imagined the whole scene to end with.

What he had prepared for is an amazed look on Baekhyun’s face after he finished telling him his theory, an agreeing nod, also ‘You’re such a genius, Yeollie! I had no idea about it before. You’re right. Let’s send him back to the foster house.’

But there he was, with Baekhyun laughing his ass off until he fell down to the floor, all rolling and giggling and snorting and rambles of “Oh gosh how could you think of something like that”, completed with tears in his eyes. Chanyeol pouted, clearly disappointed. How could he -how could his beloved Baekhyunnie laughs at him like that?

Suddenly he remembered a line on the book, read ‘Beware of the devil’s ability to take over people’s mind. You might end up as the only one aware, and people will laugh at what you say. At this point, the ability of convincing people is needed very, very much.’

“Baeeeeeeeeeeekhyuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun~” Chanyeol whined. Now he’s sure that Jongin had done something to Baekhyun because he doesn’t believe him anymore. “Let me tell you my reasoooooooooooons! And also the evidences!”

“Well, try it then.” Baekhyun said between giggles, still trying to catch his breath after two full minutes of excessive laughing. “Make me believe you, if you can.”

“He hit me with his rattles last week.” Chanyeol stated. Baekhyun looked up on him, eyes saying nice try, Yeollie, but decided to keep his mouth shut and gesturing Chanyeol to continue his explanation. “And he keeps you out of my reach every single time.”

“You’re just jealous, then.”

“No, wait! His skin is also darker than us! It’s a sign, Baekhyun, a sign!”

“And it’s not his mistake to have that shade on his skin, Yeollie.” Baekhyun laughed again. “Come on! You’re just over-emphasizing everything. Let’s face it; you’re jealous of him.”

“I am not-“

“Fine then, I’ll spare you some hour everyday, it’ll fix the situation, right?”

That way, the discussion about Jongin as a devil’s son was easily forgotten by Baekhyun (an hour passed and Baekhyun had wiped off the memory of Chanyeol’s thesis), but not by the theory’s founder. After some days of the refusal, though, he grew sick of his own theory and decided to throw it away somewhere.

-----

Some weeks later Baekhyun came home with a photo of an expressionless baby. He called him ‘Sehunnie’ and had fussed around Chanyeol all the time about how he fell in love with the baby at the first sight when he saw him after completing some administrative data of their son’s adoption details. This Sehunnie guy comes from the same foster house as Jongin, three months younger, but Chanyeol felt that there’s something about him which resembles Jongin very much. Something smells… equally devilish.

“You said that our Jongin is a devil’s son because of his skin -well, Sehunnie is an angel’s son then.” Baekhyun laughed as he snaked an arm around Chanyeol’s waist and planted a small kiss on the taller one’s lips before smiling playfully. “Sehunnie’s really cute and he makes everybody went ‘aaaaaaaawwwww~’, he’s much calmer he won’t hit you with his rattle like Jongin did, so I’m sure that you’ll love him-“

“Isn’t Jongin enough for you?” Chanyeol groaned in frustration. Baekhyun shook his head, doe-eyes staring right onto Chanyeol’s eyes. “Jonginnie feels lonely, aren’t you sad too?”

“Aren’t I the one who is supposed to be sad?” Chanyeol faked a sob and Baekhyun nudged him on his ribs, hard. Chanyeol flinches, slapping Baekhyun’s hand before scooting until he’s out of Baekhyun’s hand’s reach.

Once again, the magic of aegyo worked; less than a month later, Chanyeol found himself feeding the pale, stoic baby with a bottle of warm milk while Baekhyun cradled the still sleepy Jongin in his arms. Baekhyun smiled triumphantly at Chanyeol before putting baby Jongin in his crib. "See? Sehunnie is cute, right?"

Sehun is indeed evil, just like Jongin.
