Seems like SOME Laurel & Hardy soundies are available...and I have to wonder why ISLAND OF LOST SOULS remains among the missing.

And I wish to heck some of the better Columbia serials were available, like DEADWOOD DICK and THE SPIDER'S WEB.

BE BIG is in the Public Domain and pops up quite often. Hallmark has released two discs of L&H shorts and features, but many found the quality of the DVD's to be lacking (a new score tacked on SONS OF THE DESERT and the apparent use of shoddy TV prints). Universal has been slow about releasing their own vintage product. In addition to the ParamountISLAND, MURDERS IN THE ZOO, SUPERNATURAL, TERROR ABOARD and MURDER BY THE CLOCK lay dormant in the vaults.

And I wish to heck some of the better Columbia serials were available, like DEADWOOD DICK and THE SPIDER'S WEB. DEADWOOD DICK would be interesting,at least as a historical footnote (the Nate Love was not white as the serial would lead you to believe). I will add to that list THE IRON CLAW and ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. The former is not very good but, judging from the first chapter, action packed. It features a villain dubbed the "most dangerous criminal in ( ... )

Hmmm...I'd love a nice print of MURDERS IN THE ZOO. Taped it off TCM a few years ago, but a better copy would be great ( ... )

I'm not sure I would count The Raven since the goddamn thing won't play right!

I have been fortunate with my copy of The Bela Lugosi Collection (and all my Universal DVD's*). Thus far I've watched THE BLACK CAT, THE RAVEN and BLACK FRIDAY. I keep my talons crossed viewing MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE and THE INVISIBLE RAY.

*Not to be cornfused with Universal BVD's ("One Size Fits All").

I just bought a cheapo DVD player today at K-Mart. I think there may be a problem with my player as I've had problems with the last few DVDs I've played. Ron says that The Raven doesn't play right on his good Panasonic player but it plays perfectly on his cheapo Emerson player. So I'm going to hook this thing up in a bit and cross my fingers.....

My Panasonic is very persnickety about what it will play. I use it to test the DVDs I burn, as it will cough and die with the slightest provocation.

My cheapo player is alarmingly good-natured about playing anything except region-2 disks...and I might be able to cure that...

By Laurel and Hardy talkies, are we talking shorts or feature films? Because a good amount of their features seem to be on DVD.

FLYING DEUCES and UTOPIA are easily found as they are both in the Public Domain. Roach features BLOCKHEADS, SONS OF THE DESERT and WAY OUT WEST are the only ones to see legit release. None of their movies for Fox are on DVD (but a few were on VHS).
