I like this a lot. The imagery of stones and statues that you use reminds me of "Til We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis. It's one of my favorite works by him. You should check it out!

ah, yes. I just read quite a bit of Peretti not long ago. I very much enjoyed "Prophet", and "Monster" was pretty good. The "Darnkess" books are okay, but not my favorites of his.
