Owl to Nymphadora Tonks

Dear Miss Tonks,

I am pleased to offer you the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts Mistress at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry for the 1997-98 school year.

You are advised that the school administration believes this position is cursed, which prevents any occupant from holding it for over a year. The wizard known to most as Lord Voldemort is the suspected architect of said curse.

Previous DADA professors have disappeared (to reappear or not), have been dismembered, disgraced or killed, have lost their memories, have been shrunk, Vanished, turned into furniture, magical plants or Dark creatures, contracted curable or incurable magical maladies, and fallen prey to other temporary or permanent misfortunes. We suggest you read the accompanying pamphlet on Defence Against the Dark Arts Work Related Injuries carefully before making your decision.

Please find enclosed: a Contract of Employment including your expected responsibilities, benefits, remuneration and the school's other liabilities toward you, and Recommended Course Material for Years One through Seven, approved by the Board of Governors.

If you choose to accept this post, please owl the signed Contract to the Headmistress no later than Wednesday, 14 August 1997. We look forward to having you on our staff.

Headmistress,
Minerva McGonagall.

P.S. Miss Tonks, I would not have asked you to risk yourself in this way if I thought a better solution would present itself. It is my foremost concern to provide my students with the most competent teachers and the maximum protection I can drum up, which is why I thought of an Auror. You have an excellent way with young people, which is why I thought of you specifically.

However, I urge you to talk this over with your parents, as well as with Mr Moody. The curse is not fantasy- Professor Dumbledore himself believed it was quite real. I would also suggest you speak with Mr Lupin about taking the job, since he has some experience with teaching DADA at Hogwarts, but am understandably hesitant to do so. I leave that up to your discretion.

M McGonagall.
