It was hard to even concentrate on the Transfiguration text before him. For the first time in his entire life, Ernie cared about doing anything but doing school work. The only thing that kept him coming to classes these days were his friends, and the only thing keeping him coming to his tutoring sessions and study groups was his duty and his students. The session he awaited right now, however, was less burdensome than the rest. It gave him a chance, outside of Prefect duties, to spend time with Linus outside of the suspicious eyes of his other friends ( ... )

"Well, this must certainly be the place to be," came a voice. Linus sauntered in after it, smirk and glance at the ready. He dropped himself into the chair beside Ernie and whirled his wand between his fingers. He fought temptation, and that was to place his feet upon the table. "Its been awhile. Keeping you and your own busy?" Linus inquired casually. It must have been so strange a question- one evoking of paranoia- when it came from one with the "I" on his chest. But Linus had assured Ernie that his commendation would have little effect on how he already conducted himself and his affairs. "If you trust me, then a badge shall make little difference," Linus had said at the time.

"I thought you'd enjoy knowing that your friend Hannah's name has been stricken from the papers for now. My mother is on the Committee." Linus shrugged, placing hands atop his head and weaving his fingers. "Merry Christmas. I wish I could do more, but they will get suspicious."

Ernie looked up at the sound of his friend's voice and managed a smile in his direction. He had gotten used to the second badge on his friend's uniform almost to the point of no longer noticing it. It had bothered him at first, but he understood where Linus came from. They all were doing what they could to survive, him included ( ... )

Linus' opinion of Carrow was one marked with distaste, and though it has never been an assertion shown to her face, Linus had little difficulty showing it in the correct company. "I find her banal at best. She and her brother are everything that has gone wrong with our noble heritage. Lying down with your own kin. Everyone knows of it. One runs out of the ability to politely address someone of their breeding." Cocking his head, Linus mocked with a disgusted lip curl and scoff, "Greetings Alecto. How is your Aunt-Mother these days? Pregnant with your future husband, no doubt. Won't that make Amycus a tad jealous? HA!" Linus rolled his eyes and flexed his arms behind his head to stretch his chest and shoulder blades. "Her enthusiasm for her subject is notable as well. Any who disagree with her is hypocritically labeled as the dog she is. I know not what to do with her, save use her flesh burning hex and hope it sets her alight so I may run from her by her own light ( ... )

Ernie sought to turn away, but with confident dominance, Linus reached out and turned Ernie's face back to look at him. "Look, I'm not into doing Michael Corner of all people any favors." The lucid pools of blue that were Linus' eyes narrowed, "We don't like each other, is putting it mildly- more on his end than mine. But lets say that I won't stick my neck out for him." In a moment, the steely gaze was gone, and replaced by a look that somehow oddly paralleled concern. "You are a different story. If you really want me to fuck you right now, then I'm game. I'm always game, male or female." Linus tilted his chin up just enough to convey his next point, his air aristocratically serious, "But all it will ever be between us is sex. I don't do emotion and I don't do romantic attachments. All I'll ever be to you is a mate helping out another mate ( ... )

The most overwhelming emotion Ernie felt at hearing Linus' words was... relief. Relief that there was some sort of method to Linus' madness, relief that he had such a friend who genuinely cared for his happiness, and more than any of that, relief that there would be no hurt feelings for either of them in the end. This was not some fancy on Linus' part that Ernie would have to reject, simply... comfort ( ... )

It had been planted and watered. Its existence had been exposed to the sun. Now, Linus simply sat back and watched the petals unfold. The petals were Ernie's thought process, as he slowly unraveled his own thinking... his own emotions. He watched the Prefect drink of the truth like rays of warm light.

Perceptive eyes searched Ernie for the barest hint of lies, of self-deception, for it wasn't really Linus Ernie was talking to. He was divulging the truth to himself. Linus was just a convenient target- a physicality to aim words at. But he proved to be there for one other cause.

Physical support. The moment Ernie slumped in surrender, Linus snapped. "Head high. Shoulders back." He barely smiled, his look piercing his older friend, "Realization of what you are is not a surrendering offense, so I will thank you to sit up and take stock of what you have gleaned. You've done nothing wrong by admitting you want Corner, so why behave as such ( ... )

Ernie nearly smiled at Linus' instructions to sit up, only just resisting the urge to stick his tongue out at him as he did as he was told. He of all people should know about maintaining good posture... for the briefest of moments, he wondered if Michael knew how to dance.

"He likes white roses," Ernie answered immediately. "And beating me on tests, especially in Potions. And helping people..."

He shook his head. "I can't do that, not now, not without knowing more. I need to know if I'm ready for something like that. If he's ready. And even if it's all true, what if it still doesn't work again, and I'm less another friend ( ... )
