It was hard to even concentrate on the Transfiguration text before him. For the first time in his entire life, Ernie cared about doing anything but doing school work. The only thing that kept him coming to classes these days were his friends, and the only thing keeping him coming to his tutoring sessions and study groups was his duty and his students. The session he awaited right now, however, was less burdensome than the rest. It gave him a chance, outside of Prefect duties, to spend time with Linus outside of the suspicious eyes of his other friends ( ... )

"I thought you'd enjoy knowing that your friend Hannah's name has been stricken from the papers for now. My mother is on the Committee." Linus shrugged, placing hands atop his head and weaving his fingers. "Merry Christmas. I wish I could do more, but they will get suspicious."

Ernie looked up at the sound of his friend's voice and managed a smile in his direction. He had gotten used to the second badge on his friend's uniform almost to the point of no longer noticing it. It had bothered him at first, but he understood where Linus came from. They all were doing what they could to survive, him included ( ... )

Perceptive eyes searched Ernie for the barest hint of lies, of self-deception, for it wasn't really Linus Ernie was talking to. He was divulging the truth to himself. Linus was just a convenient target- a physicality to aim words at. But he proved to be there for one other cause.
Physical support. The moment Ernie slumped in surrender, Linus snapped. "Head high. Shoulders back." He barely smiled, his look piercing his older friend, "Realization of what you are is not a surrendering offense, so I will thank you to sit up and take stock of what you have gleaned. You've done nothing wrong by admitting you want Corner, so why behave as such ( ... )

"He likes white roses," Ernie answered immediately. "And beating me on tests, especially in Potions. And helping people..."
He shook his head. "I can't do that, not now, not without knowing more. I need to know if I'm ready for something like that. If he's ready. And even if it's all true, what if it still doesn't work again, and I'm less another friend ( ... )
