A continuation of
Day 12 to clear up a loose end.
He Managed To Float Continued
I blushed, glad that she couldn’t tell. Fur comes in handy every once in a while.
“Thank you,” I growled. “You’re looking good yourself.”
She smiled at me and, glancing at Ears and the Perfesser, smiled at them as well. They shuffled their feet and mumbled greetings.
The kid…Cripes! I remembered when he was small enough to fit in her pocket! Now he was as tall as she was. Hadn’t filled out yet, but you could tell he was going to be big when he was done growing.
“How ya doin’ kid?” I asked him.
The kid looked like he’d just swallowed a live goldfish that didn’t want to stay swallowed.
“F..f…fine Sir,” he stammered.
I nodded and started to ask Mom what I could do for her when he piped up again.
“Please sir,” he almost whispered. “What happened to Tigger?” His mom gasped.
“Roo!” She hissed at him.
“I’ve got to know Mom,” he told her. “We were friends once.”
My face hardened and my eyes went flat. Or maybe it was the other was around. Either way, I wanted it clear I was only going to say this once.
“Stripes thought he could bounce in and take over after Big Chris lammed on us,” I said, low. “So me and Pinky and Ears,” I jerked my chin in his direction, “we took him into the woods, way in where no one ever goes, and we explained the situation to him and told him it’d be better for everyone if he just got lost.” I peered at the kid to make sure he was getting all of this. He looked scared and gulped, but he clearly wanted me to go on with the story.
“Idiot told us he never got lost,” I continued and stopped. I hoped I wouldn’t have to say more. His Mom looked vaguely horrified.
“Wh…what did you do then?” the kid asked.
I sighed. “Pinky and I left Ears to deal with him,” I said. “Stripes never came back.”
The kids face blinched but he didn’t say anything. He stepped back to the comfort of his Mom’s side. She put an arm around his shoulder.
“Next time dear,” she told him in her soft voice, “Maybe you’ll pay attention when I tell you there are things you’re better off not knowing about.”
