Hmm. I've been told I ought to apply to be a Fulbright scholar, but looking over the website, I swiftly got the impression I am nowhere near high-achieving or interesting enough to qualify. It's a useful resource anyway in terms of applying to US colleges when you're in the UK or vice versa, though - there's a lot of good information on there.

Should I take from this that you're considering coming over here to study? BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

oh my goddddd i tried to explore the fulbright site, cried at the utter overload of information and then promptly went begging to my program chair to put me in contact with someone who's already gone through the process. the scholar i'm talking to right now says that successful applications don't depend so much on the gpa/statistics, but on the project that you propose and the contacts you have in the country you want to go to (for us scholars). i think i should have been thinking about this at least half a year ago if i want a good chance. /o\

also I REALLY WISH I COULD COME TO THE UK!!! i used to work for a small biotech company that has a branch in the uk and they're also looking for a lab tech and i'm tempted to ask them whether the position is open in cambridge or the us and apply accordingly haha. apparently fulbrights to the uk are the most competitive though (less than 1/10 chance of acceptance) so i'm better off applying to china (~1/3rd chance). what is mandarin. >_____

Ugh, it's all about contacts, isn't it? God knows how/why/when they expect people to do all this sodding networking in between doing their actual academic work and/or the general getting-together of shit that takes place at the same stage in your life as you're doing studies.

It doesn't surprise me at all that there's a lot of competition to go to the UK, and it's probably the case the other way around as well. 33% success rate for China sounds much better! I have a few acquaintances who've studied in Asia and seemed to enjoy themselves - there seem to be an awful lot of internships and things going, if you know where to look for them (which I don't, or else I'd point you in their direction), so that could also be a possibility for some kind of year of work experience in between courses.
