Vitarka mudra is all about transmission of information, so that seems apropos.
Personally I feel the artist is more depicting him dancing, as his mudra depictions are not so nuanced. But Ganapati is frequently shown dancing, and/or holding modern implements (cellphones, beer, commercial product xyz), so it's all good. He's one of those devas who's really mellow and most Desi don't get superstitious about altering for Kali Yuga.

Also: I had to look it up on Wikipedia, but I suppose the vitarka mudra there indicates that he's about to drop the knowledge?
