Good to hear from you!

So, I am not familiar with this particular system of yours—if you study certain subjects, you are exempt from mandatory military service, but in others, you must perform that service?

What period(s) of history are you studying in particular?

Every male citicen has to either serve in the army for 6 months, work for a social institution like the red cross for 9 months or work for a social or memorial institution abroad for 12 months. The ministry offers a list of places where you can go, you can't just go anywhere. I have to apply for three places and I might get one of them.
We get quite a good overview over all periods of history and later we have to specialize. Since I'm a beginner I still have time to choose a period, an aspect or a region. A major part of the studies is occupied by methodical subjects, since historians need a broad variety of methods.
