Nightmares and dreamscapes

Had a terribly dark dream a couple of nights ago; even now I kind of dread putting it in words because it's so disturbing.

WARNING: THIS STORY IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

==========

I came home to an empty house. It was my own house, no doubt about it; the furnishings were exactly the same. What was unnerving was that though it was daytime, the lights were all switched on, and the television was too, but there was no one at home. The house was empty and the sounds from the television sounded hollow.

I turned everything off. The silence was almost deafening. Even in the dream I felt spooked. The front door had somehow closed itself; I don't remember shutting it.

I started to hear strange sounds. Whispers, bangs, knocks.

I was at the kitchen window, looking out, as if I was searching, waiting for something to happen. I found it, in the window of the flat across from mine. A little girl, aged 4 (don't ask me why such a specific age, I somehow just knew in the dream, and that fact just stuck with me even after waking up) was standing on the window sill of the kitchen window, back facing out.

Next I knew, she fell backwards.

I screamed and averted my eyes, but I heard the crunch of her skull hitting the ground. I think I woke up partially at this point before lapsing back into the dream again.

The rest of the dream is a haze, but I was in great distress. I saw the body lying on the concrete pavement with - strangely - whitish fluid all around the head, but no blood.

The next part of the dream I remember was that the body had been moved, but there was a group of people standing at the spot it had fallen, including the girl's family, and a dog which was howling.

And someone beside me at the window (my mother?) said, "They shouldn't stand there and mourn, the girl won't be able to leave in peace."

What really unsettled me when I woke up was how real and vivid the dream seemed. I couldn't quite tell if it was a dream or it had really happened. I even lingered at my kitchen window for a long moment that next morning, looking at the window from which the girl fell in my dream, getting goosebumps.
