I have a heat-proof table mat. It's a circle of the heatproof matting you can buy to put on tables, dark brown leather-look with a white/cream felt backing - I got it as a free sample at an Ideal Home Show or a craft show some years ago. It lives on the dining table, on top of a rubber mat (which is bigger) so I can put hot stuff straight down

Have you checked to make sure the squirrel hasn't taken up frisbee throwing instead of pole sliding?
