Aspen Digs - July 11 (part 1)

Jul 06, 2011 10:10

First off, I reviewed the new Handsome Furs LP, here.

The past few months have seen lots (and lots and lots) of high profile releases. Now that those are finally winding down, I can focus on some more unknown stuff. So that’s what this update will eventually get to.

But after these.

Bon Iver - Wash. (from Bon Iver)

John Maus - Believer (from We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves)

Shabazz Palaces - An Echo From the Hosts That Profess Infinitum (from Black Up)

I already mentioned those in my favorites list, so I don’t see much need in elaborating.

There’s also a new album out from Brian Eno that I’m digging, as well as new Memory Tapes.

I’m given to understand that Pure X has been around for a while, but Pleasure is their debut album. People will (and are) complain that it’s too monotone and relaxed. They have a point, but for me this album really works. It puts me in the mind of early 90’s underground music (Pavement, My Bloody Valentine) just much more chill. Pleasure isn’t an album to jam to so much as one to soak in.

Pure X - Twisted Mirror
Pure X - Dry Ice

And speaking of soaking. House of Wolves could be described as the folk equivalent to Spoon. The instrumentation is very minimalistic, but it’s utilized to create atmosphere. Also, the vocalist is a dude. I swear.

You can stream/buy the entire album here.
