He knew she was trouble from the moment he saw her. Caleb could tell when someone was a user, usually just by looking at them, but it was even easier when he had a look at a person's mannerisms. And this girl, Chloe, Blake's star actress, had all the signs. Bloodshot eyes that she tried to pass off as insomnia-induced. A tremor in her hands that was barely distinguishable from normal body movement. She was beautiful. Caleb couldn't keep his eyes off of her the entire rehearsal, sketching her hands, her lips, her legs.

Blake introduced them after rehearsal was over, and she gave Caleb her number. He'd planned on moving along some time in the next week, but he found he couldn't even think about leaving. Not when she wanted him. And what was the point of leaving to use when he was already sneaking backstage at Blake's rehearsals to take a couple pills and make out with Chloe? She was skilled and loaded and she was more than willing to spend her lunch break blowing or fucking him in one of the rooms beneath the stage.

But like everything else in his life, Caleb couldn't control it. He should have known Blake would find out eventually, but he didn't know it would go the way it did.

Blake had given his actors an hour for lunch and immediately disappeared into the tech booth in the back of the theater, probably to call Topher and bitch about how the production was going. Caleb set his sketchbook aside as soon as the door was closed and casually made his way down the aisle. Chloe sat down on the edge of the stage and Caleb kissed her.

"Orchestra pit," she murmured. Caleb glanced over his shoulder at the tech booth and Chloe laughed. "Behind the pit, then. That room that I blew you in that one time."

"That narrows it down, thanks," Caleb teased. Chloe only laughed again and hopped down to lead him away. They slipped into the pit and out of sight beneath the stage. Caleb gently pinned Chloe against one of the supports, kissing her lips and her neck and her shoulders until she was squirming and whimpering. He finally let up when she pushed him back, smiling.

"Want something?" she asked breathlessly. Caleb nodded, and Chloe dug into her pocket. "I got some Oxycontin," she told him, holding a pill between her thumb and forefinger. "My dad uses them for his knee. You want?"

Caleb smiled and leaned forward. He intended to wrap his lips around her fingers and suck the pill down before giving her another kiss, but his plans were shattered. A hand grabbed his shoulder and Caleb found himself thrown against another support by a furious Blake.

"Oh shit," Caleb whispered weakly.

"Oh shit is right," Blake sneered. Caleb couldn't remember ever seeing Blake this angry before. "You want to tell me what the fuck you were thinking?"

"What the hell is your problem, Blake?" Chloe asked, crossing her arms over her chest and somehow managing not to even waver when Blake glared fiercely in her direction. "He has a headache. It's just aspirin." Blake narrowed his eyes when she held out a small white pill, one that was very much not Oxycontin.

"Caleb," Blake started. He sounded as if he was physically struggling to keep himself from yelling. "Is this true?"

Goddamn it. Caleb had never in his life been able to lie to Blake. Not even the smallest of fibs. Blake could see right through any sort of front he put up. Sometimes it was a good thing, because it kept Caleb from thinking stupid things. Right now, however, it was going to get him killed.

"No, ge ge," Caleb whispered. Really, there was no point in even trying to lie. "I'm sorry. I never meant-"

"Save it," Blake snapped. "Chloe, get your ass up on stage and stay there. We're going to have a little cast meeting." Chloe took off, and Caleb cowered when Blake gave him his full attention. They stood there in silence for a long time. Caleb trembled in fear of what Blake would do to him, and he nearly jumped out of his skin when he was pulled into a sudden, tight hug.

"I'm sorry, mei mei. Whatever I've done to make you want to do this..."

Caleb's stomach sank miserably, and he turned his face into Blake's shoulder. "You didn't do anything, ge ge. I swear, it's nothing to do with you. I'm just fucked up. M'sorry, I just... It was there, so I did it. No other reason than that." He could feel Blake sigh, and Caleb cautiously wrapped his arms around Blake's middle. "I'm sorry..."

"What can I do, Caleb? What do you need me to do? Anything, mei mei."

"I don't know," Caleb whispered, chewing the inside of his cheek. Blake held him silently for a moment, then pulled back, gently brushing some hair behind Caleb's ear.

"...I'mma take you to a meeting tomorrow," Blake said calmly. Caleb let his head fall back against the support beam and closed his eyes. "I know you hate it, but we're going. And then we'll... I don't know. We'll visit one of the family restaurants and hang out."

"You have rehearsal," Caleb reminded him tiredly.

"It'll take me some time to find a new lead. We'll take a hiatus."

Caleb lifted his head. "What?"

"Chloe broke her contract," Blake replied simply. "She's out. Go get your stuff together and call a cab." His tone left no room for argument, and Caleb nodded. When Blake gave him a flash of a smile and turned to leave, Caleb grabbed his wrist.

"...I'm really sorry, ge ge."

Blake's smile came easier this time, and he kissed Caleb's forehead. "I know, mei mei. I'll meet you outside in a few minutes, okay?"

Caleb nodded and let him go this time. Fuck, he hated meetings. But at least Blake hadn't killed him. When he heard Blake's voice ringing out through the theater, he slunk out of his hiding place and made it to his seat without looking at the stage. He could hear noises that sounded like crying - goddamn it, Chloe was crying - but he didn't look, he just grabbed his things and high-tailed it out of the theater. He wanted to keep going, to keep running, but he couldn't. He was too fucking tired. Caleb closed his eyes and sat down next to the ticket booth for a moment before digging out his cell. He had a cab to call, of course, but first? First he had an apology to make.

Caleb dialed the phone and waited until the answering machine picked up, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Chloe. It's Caleb. You won't get this until you get home, but...I'm sorry. I never wanted you to get involved in this. I just..." He trailed off, pressing his lips together. "...I really liked you. I just wanted you to know." Caleb hung up without another word and dialed the cab company.
