voting woes & July books

So, bummer, complete bummer, I found out I'm not enrolled to vote anymore and it's too late to enrol. I had to call the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission - did I get that right?) the other day because I tried searching for my enrolment on their website but got nothing - it's like being told you don't exist! I'm really annoyed with myself. ( Read more... )

I just finished Little Brother a few days ago! I absolutely loved it. I'm a geek about survelience technology, that's probably part of it. :D

Little Brother was great, I really enjoyed it! A lot of the geek-speak went over my head a bit, especially the stuff about keys, but I was glad he tried to explain it and I just took it on faith that Marcus knew what he was talking about!

Mandatory voting sounds good to me--but I can hear the conservatives and fundies now--how the damn government is looking for another way to control our lives. Of course if it was their beloved Bush's idea...but they'll automatically be against anything a Democrat proposes, just on principle. Ugh, I don't need to go into that. I'm in a fairly good mood, don't want to ruin it. As for books, I'm afraid the only new thing I've read is Tongues of Serpents, the new Temeraire book. It was a little disappointing. I don't think anything will ever be as good as His Majesty's Dragon. Everything else has just been rereads.

Ha ha yeah I've noticed that! I can also hear Americans - and Canadians, based on how they got red light cameras taken away - whine about it infringing on their "rights". People use that word as an easy excuse for not doing something they should, without really understanding it. I was shocked to hear that they used to have red light cameras here until people complained that it infringed on their rights! What kind of argument is that?! It ISN'T one ( ... )

It's those same bozos who say crap like ''What happened to freedom of speech'' When they say something dumb or unpopular and get slammed. Because of course the whole internet counts as America. Not to mention freedom of speech only means the government can't censor you, not that you can say whatever stupid bullshit you want, or that you're immune from consequences when you do

Thinking I may have to disagree about the compulsory voting thing. I am AMAZED at how many of my friends and colleagues don't know who they are going to vote for at all until the day / just don't care at all / will just pick the top person on the ballot box. Horrifying.
