Twenty Things That Are My Personal SG-1 Canon

May 17, 2007 00:08

Yay, I'm so close to done on my sd_ficathon story! Just have one more transition scene to write, then it needs to be revised and betaed (and probably heavily revised again). And for all my attempts to write a "short" story, it's clocking in around 7,000 words at the moment. Sigh. It's supposed to be a nice easy tale.

In any case, with the story mostly on "paper" and not just in my head, I decided to play with the current meme circling around fandom. Gakked from at least 3/4 of my flist by this point:

Twenty Things that are my personal SG-1 canon.

1. The science gang of the SGC gets together for pizza night once a month. They tried to get together more often, for bowling nights or hiking trips, but a good dozen of them are on field teams, two on SG-1 alone, so once a month is the best bet for having most of the group around for beer and pizza. It's nice hearing stories about Bill Lee's kids, or Balinsky's adventures with SG-13.

2. A little part of Jack died when Elizabeth Weir told him about his promotion to Brigadier General. Hammond had convinced him to put his name up for advancement, but Jack had never thought much about it. Too many crises. He was too indispensable on the front lines. Nor had he paid attention to the list when it came out, being just defrosted at the time. He was happy to see Carter advanced to Lieutenant Colonel, but his own promotion filling Hammond's shoes never fit comfortably. The second star now gracing his uniform feels all that much heavier as he now patrols the halls of the Pentagon.

3. Daniel has made a point to have extra sparring sessions with his teammates to try and hone his hand-to hand skills. He was always a crack shot at firing a gun, but he's never been great at coordination in close combat to his utter frustration. He thinks he's improving, but he also wonders if the others are taking pity on him sometimes.

4. Cameron Mitchell and his brother spent every summer with relatives down in one of the Carolinas. Dad would sometimes get long assignments and the military bases blended. Cam's parents felt that going "home" every summer would help bring some stability for Cam and his brother. Even after Frank Mitchell's accident and they ended up settling down in Kansas, Cam's "southern roots" remained.

5. After Catherine and Earnest started their "happily ever after", Catherine cleaned out a lot of stuff. She gave a few things to Samantha and Jack, but most went to Daniel, remembering his few personal possessions and suspecting after Abydos that hadn't changed. That's how Daniel ended up with a piano and various reproductions of museum pieces (and a few originals) in his apartment....which leads to #6.

6. Daniel is actually a skilled musician. He always had an ear for music, but his foster mother started him with piano lessons and he enjoyed the release it gave him. He even took a few courses in music theory and harmonics in college as electives. He still dabbles from time to time, but can't engage in it like he used to. His foster mother always regretted he didn't pursue music as a career.

7. As a child, Teal'c loved to color with the various pigments used for dying garments. He would splay them on rocks and trees, watching how they changed shades. After his father died, he grew out of this phase and learned the skills of a warrior. But his appreciation for bright colors remained, they symbolized, life, hope and happiness to him. When he came to the Tau'ri, he was pleased upon his first shopping trip with Samantha Carter that he discovered such a wide array of various dyed clothing. He does not understand why his teammates do not similarly choose a variety of bright colors after being stuck in camouflage style military gear for their jobs, but then there is much he does not understand about the Tau'ri.

8. Sam isn't sure why she bought her house in Colorado Springs. She did it soon after she was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain. Part of it she knows was a subconscious rebellion from when she was refused in the first Stargate mission-now she was there and they couldn't make her leave, she had a house there. Part of it was feeling a sense of normalcy and a regular life considering her day job. She even picked out one with a white picket fence. She sometimes wonders if it's a waste when she gets her landscaper's bill or realizes by the spoilt contents of the refrigerator how long it's been since she left her quarters at the SGC. But every so often, when she notices the couple down the street arguing where to plant the next azalea bush, or the widowed woman next door bringing cookies to all the children playing, she's happy with her home.

9. The guys upstairs at NORAD learned a long time ago not to question what happens in that "deep space radar telemetry" program downstairs in Cheyenne Mountain. They started to wonder why the SGC would create various security drills and evacuations, but when they see the types of personnel that go down that extra elevator and the respect the NORAD brass give that two star Hammond when they meet, most personnel just keep their heads down and ask no questions.

10. Teal'c misses believing in a god. Bra'tac crushed him that day Teal'c received the gold Goa'uld symbol when he revealed Apophis was not a god, and ever since he has been looking for something more. He thought he saw it with O'Neill's team when they first met. And though he considers SG-1 family and cherishes their ideas of freedom and hope, they did not provide the solace of a higher being that he seeks. He investigated the various religions of the Tau'ri, and though he appreciated several of their tenets, none ever seemed to fit. When he reached Kheb and met the ascended ones, he felt he had truly touched "god" and was comforted when Daniel Jackson joined them upon his death. Since Daniel's return, Teal'c has viewed the ascended with a more jaundiced eye. Teal'c has been betrayed by false hopes and false gods too many times now, but he can't help but still search for a higher purpose every time he goes through the Stargate.

11. There are superstitions followed by each of the SG teams. SG-4 never goes out without a pack of cigarettes, a pack of cards, and two extra chocolate bars. The stuff saved their lives in an early mission when they ran into some ugly natives and now they always keep them in case it ever happens again. SG-8 always holds hands and says a silent prayer before leaving the locker room. The commander of SG-20 always puts on his left boot first and touches the picture of his family in his locker before leaving. Each team has its ritual. No one discusses it.

12. Daniel remembers every second of his imprisonment with Replicarter. He can't comprehend the knowledge he used to stop the replicators, but he remembers the result, including his agonizing death. He remembers her showing him Dakara and the memory she brought forth of his inability to stop the destruction of Abydos. From those few memories and his also perfect recall of the events in the Astral Diner, he doesn't wish to know more. He's been told what he did for Jack and Teal'c during that time, and he decides there's some memories he's better off without. He occasionally has flashbacks when Sam startles him, but he would never tell her.

13. Daniel didn't fully ascend a second time. It was the Others who stopped the clock and saved the SGC. They sent him back in gratitude for helping Oma find her path with Anubis, and decided it was pointless to send him back as the place was blowing up because Daniel's ascended knowledge was fresh enough in his head he's just boomerang back to them. (I really do plan on writing a sequel to "Interference" explaining this better someday).

14. Jack still loves Sara, and has remained in touch with her through the years. They've never been able to reconcile because he still holds too much guilt over Charlie, but he cherishes the friendship they've been able to keep. He doesn't like to talk about it. He's never told any of his team. It's just something he holds close.

15. The commissary staff makes sure to put in extra requisitions for Jell-o. They try to keep an eye on the roster to know when extras should be made, since everyone has their favorites. SG-3 and Teal'c prefer green. Samantha Carter started a trend with the science teams and on-base staff with blue jell-o. Many other teams like red. Orange was banned after SG-14 caught that parasite on P3G-452 that manifested while they were eating dessert.

16. Sam started riding motorcycles in high school. Her first boyfriend taught her and introduced her to this little back alley shop where they didn't mind someone playing with old scrap parts. The newly minted Brigadier General Jacob Carter did not approve-of either the boyfriend or the motorcycles, which made Sam enjoy it all the more. It was typical teenage rebellion. The boyfriend disappeared long before graduation, but she never stopped her love of motorcycles. She loved tinkering with the engines-taking them apart and putting them back together. Speeding along on something she had worked on with her hands gave her a feeling of accomplishment more than the theoretical possibilities she loved. Plus riding a motorcycle was the closest thing to flying before the USAF introduced her to planes.

17. Teal'c made a point to learn the written English language by studying it with Cassie. Daniel Jackson helped him with initial lessons, but Teal'c soon bonded with the young alien child. It was something they could learn together and practice their skills. They worked their way through nursery rhymes, and Dr. Seuss. Eventually they developed to chapter books. Although Teal'c progressed to more adult fare, he still has a fondness for the girl detective Nancy Drew, mainly because of Cassandra Fraiser's enthusiasm for the tales.

18. Sgt. Siler runs most of the various betting pools at the SGC. But there's one of which he's not aware. Siler is the most frequent visitor to the SGC infirmary (he's been there more than twice the amount of any field SG team member. Second place holder is Lieutenant Grogan of SG-6). The poll's not so much a matter of when he's injured, but how and in which department.

19. Jack's pond always had fish until it was overfished a few years ago. He didn't want to break it to Teal'c when he took him, because "catching" a fish isn't the point anyhow. Minnesota Natural Resources replenished the supply there and a few other places in a conservation effort soon before Jack finally got all the team up there. The neighbor who took care of the place informed him when he called to say he was coming. When Carter got concerned at seeing the animals, he waved it off without explaining further, and her discussion with Daniel about time travel and alternate universes was a pleasant background buzz the rest of the evening. Jack misses going to the cabin now that he's in D.C., and wishes there was a military base close enough he could find an excuse to visit more often.

20. Team night was always unorganized when Jack was in command. It was more a spontaneous, "have tickets to an Avalanche game" or "let's grab some Chinese after a rough mission." When Jonas was on the team and had clearance to leave Cheyenne, they tried to set it up a few times, but it was tough. Three of them were still mourning their old team member, and Jonas was too enchanted with the new experiences for it to seem natural. When Carter was in command, team night tended not to happen just because of her and Daniel's added duties...that is until Teal'c took control of setting things up and slipping the details to Gen. O'Neill's office in case he wanted to come. When Mitchell gained command, he set up "team movie night" as if he had invented it. It was organized, every other Friday when they were on-world, in addition to his attempts to drag the others to his self appointed critiquing of the menu of every restaurant in the area. The others just let Cameron believe he was being original with the morale booster, though they vetoed his wanting exclusive choice of the movies...he has odd taste.

Okay, so 1 and 20 (and 19) are along the same lines. Oh well, it's my list, and I'm a teamy goodness kinda gal. LOL. Of course none of my entries are *short*. Sigh.
