I love 80's movies (and you should too)

If you’re following me on twitter then you know I’m a fan of movies/tv/pop culture of the 1980’s and early 1990’s.  I love all the bad clothes, bad hair, cheesy music and excellent slang.  Sadly there are a few of you on the flist who were just wee little babies during this epic decade.  I am tired of hearing “I was only 3 when that came out”, “I ( Read more... )

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ZOMG YAY! JOHN HUGHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited for this post!

"For the shipper in me, Watts and Keith are the closest 80’s versions of Kara and Lee and that just makes me happy."

YES THEY ARE. WATTS COULD BE KARA THRACE'S MOM! SHE REALLY COULD! AND KEITH HAS DADDY ISSUES! AND THEY'RE SO <3 <3 <3 <3

AND LOOK AT THEIR SMOKING CHEMISTRY HERE:

Gah and their banter is sooo fantastic. My favorite quote might be "I'd bet my hands on it!" SO ANGSTY! Or maybe "Ever seen a girl with a drumstick shoved up her nose?" SO TOUGH ( ... )

My favorite part of Pretty in Pink is the dress. And Annie Potts because I knew someone very much like her when I was in HS. I actually forgot to comment on PiP below. I like it better than Sixteen Candles but it was so ubiquitous for so long that it lost meaning for me. Hrm.

I have to admit I thought the dress was the most hideous thing ever. Even for 80s fashion. It had awful polka dots and cut out sleeves and it didn't even fit her well! I remember seeing it at the end and going...but...why did she make that very pretty pink dress into...THAT?!

LOL. Annie Potts was fun though.

Oh, but it's so 80's whack-ass fashion (which I was very, very into), and I loved that she made it.

--I saw Breakfast Club for the first time at church because aside from language it's actually a really interesting discussion about the high school social system.

--I can recite huge portions of Breakfast Club to this day. I will embarrass my child one day with this skill.

--I saw Ferris Bueller twice the weekend it opened in theatres.

--I saw Some Kind of Winderful twice the weekend it opened, once with my mother who sang with the closing credits.

--When I was in college the "How to Kiss" scene between Keith and Watts was the litmus test for kissing. If you couldn't imagine kissing someone in that scene you should stop flirting now.

--I don't actually like Sixteen Candles. I find most of the characters to be grating and one dimensional. I didn't see it until it was probably ten years old which I'm sure has something to do with it because later JH movies had nuansed the genre.

--I've never seen any of the National Lampoon Vacation movies. *shrugs*

That was the litmus test? NICE.

(Now I really want to write Kara/Lee as Watts/Keith. That scene! I wouldn't even have to change much of the dialogue. Lol.)

Ferris Bueller is so much fun. Just a perfect adventure flick.

I like the NLV movies too. Beverly D'Angelo is so underrated as an actress. Love her.

Those are all awesome facts. The only movie I actually saw in the theaters was Pretty in Pink because my sister was babysitting me and she wanted to go with her friends so we snuck out while mom was out!

The National Lampoon movies are straight up hilarious. Just pure silly, slapstick, comedic genius. I highly rec. My family often refers to themselves as "The Griswolds" because we can be that screwed up. lol

Slapstick makes me uncomfortable. I think I've seen too much that just wasn't very good. eh.

I was "prime go to a movie" age when most of these movies came out, and my mom has a things for 80's movies. I'll tell stories as they come up cuz I find them hysterical.

Also I will embarrass both my children with Breakfast Club quotes. It's unlikely that one would be ok with my antics.

Lol. Is that Jamie in your icon? What is that from? Not a BSG shot right?

Nope, not Jamie. It's Tahmoh from Jamie's episode of Dollhouse. When he was being emo laying around thinking of Echo getting it on with Martin.

Who doesn't love 80's movies? It's like a crime against good taste.

I love all of those movies! Some are definitely going to be listed in my "must sees" The Goonies I watched over and over and over and over. Had such a crush on young Sean Astin. *sigh*

Better off Dead is one of the greatest 80's movies ever made. No question. Epic funnies!

I fail at 80s movie fandom. I have only seen 2 of these movies (Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller) once. I should really see the rest of them one day. I feel like I'm missing out.

*rubs hands together* OH BB! You definitely should! They can feel extremely outdated in this day and age but so many of the movies you probably have seen (Clueless, Mean Girls, Easy A etc) all began with these movies.

Since I know you're a shipper, i would definitely give Some Kind of Wonderful a shot. I hope you enjoy if/when you watch...come back and let me know what you thought!
