I LOVE David Foster Wallace and have plowed through "Infinite Jest." I was just talking to another friend about him. He could just focus on the tiniest thing and make it universal.
He attended my college, but well before my time. I'd start with the short stories, because "Infinite Jest" is a challenge.
He committed suicide--never could quite escape his demons. What's also interesting is that people are saying that Jeffrey Eugenides' latest novel is a thinly disguised story of he and Foster Wallace. Additionally Jonathan Franzen and he were considered to be vieing for the title of best novelist of their generation.
