Rec: Lizzie Bennet and its Sequel

Some people on my flist made reference to Lizzie Bennett Diaries, but I didn't pay much attention. It seemed like an odd P&P thing, and I've become skeptical of those ever since somebody paired it with zombies.

How wrong I was. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries are awesome! It's a completely new spin on Pride & Prejudice, setting it in today's world-- ( Read more... )

Some. I am not finding it all that enjoyable, to be honest. I'm guessing it'll pick up soon, though--I remember enjoying Sanditon itself when I read it! (I read a version that someone had finished.) Of course, I don't remember ANYTHING about it, and so I'm wondering what is going on.

Also, it was SO WEIRD to realize that I really liked Lydia and was rooting for her.

I think some of it the nature of the medium. In both, we're viewing things (mostly) through Lizzie's perspective, but in the book, it's almost more intimate. By view of the narrative, we're in her mind looking out at the world through her eyes. Austen made her mostly perceptive, so her prejudices and thus unreliable parts of her narration were more hidden.

But in the videos, we're hearing things from Lizzie's perspective, but there's the distance of her talking to us as a separate person via the camera lens. So we can form our own opinions not only about the "secondary" characters, but also about her.

Also, maybe Lydia was just all more attuned to being a 21st century gal. ;-)

Look at you, making me pull out all my lit theory kinda talk. :-p

LBD! I did something similar - and then I had a load of days off and just watched ALL the eps in about two sessions.

And Lydia! It feels so strange to like her - I've seen some great adaptations of P&P, and yet no one, until now, has made her likeable.

It is SO strange to like her.

Mr Collins still makes my skin crawl, though. I guess they couldn't turn them all into decent human beings...

LOL, I checked and I think I'm up to the episode where he gets introduced. So...yeah. That oughta be interesting.

Of course Mr. Collins v Lydia was so much the riot...
