dulcene et decorum est pro se vivare?

I don't usually post stuff like this, but I've been kinda in a slump lately and think that getting my thoughts together in some shape or form might be beneficial ( Read more... )

Firstly, as for Japanese, I think that having Igarashii for a semester has stunted everyone. Across the board. It pisses me off frequently ( ... )

But later when I finally watched an episode of those with English subtitles I realized that I just barely got the basic meaning down, and didn't get the wittiness that goes with a fun drama. After 301 and 302, that hasn't improved all that much.
Also with trying to speak Japanese more and more this semester, I realized how much I CAN'T express. I try to think of sentences and I just get stuck. Granted I have a hard enough time to keep a conversation going in English, but I just want the sentences to flow perfectly. Plus there are a lot of grammar points I know and learned, but cannot produce. And whenever I hear it and finally connect it to a meaning I always feel especially dumb for NOT getting it earlier.Don't be so hard on yourself. You've never lived in Japan (nor been I'm assuming from the way this entry was written) so of course your ability is going to be lower. Very very very few people can speak at a semi-fluent level and understand dramas after 3 years of college study in the US (don't listen to the obnoxious people who brag ( ... )

As a fellow linguist and language lover AND pop culture lover, I completely understand how you feel. I think a lot of us, regardless of what major or what we're studying feel this way about ourselves. The thing is, don't be so hard on yourself. Language is a subject that often takes a lot more time than the average subject from what I've notice. It takes constant practice and routine in order to get the gist of a language. There are many aspects of language learning to consider not just limited to reading, writing, speaking and listening, but also prosody, intonation, polite registers, slang, and many other things that aren't described in textbooks. However, that doesn't mean it's impossible. When you are able to go to Japan and experience the language in a completely emerged environment, you'll be able to see that you understand more than you think you do ( ... )

I'm up late an lacking sense, so I might be a little jumbled. However, overall, it just boils down to this: ROCK IT OR FUCK IT. Either way, it's in your control. Inadequacies just pop up hardcore while learning a language. I still feel odd about ordering dim sum in Cantonese sometimes and I'm fluent in it, lol. If you aren't 100 percent immersed that is just what will happen. Study as much as you can and have the courage to follow through. Just have confidence in yourself ( ... )

Hello,
I was listening to this station at around 4:50 pm EST on Sunday June 15th, 2008. I enjoyed the song but missed the title and the artist. I was wondering if you could help me if there's a song list or a backlog to what was playing at the time.
For more information, I know it was a girl singer from the late 80s. and I think it was played 2 songs before a song by the Commodores.

Thanks for any help.
