Holistic Health Fair and reading the phone book

Since I apparently don't have enough to do and/or worry about, I've been tapped to work on promotional materials for the Second Annual Waco Holistic Health Fair. Yeah, I'm on the committee that's planning the whole thing. I have a coffee meeting godawful early Wednesday morning so I'm trying to have more materials than just the exhibitor invitation ( Read more... )

It's on the list, though Waco doesn't have much to offer.

Acupuncture
Back Care
Candles
Chiropractors
Dance Instruction
Exercise and Physical Fitness clubs
Health Clubs and Gymnasiums
Health Food stores
Herbs
Homeopaths
Massage Therapy
Midwives and Doulas
Naturopaths
Nutritionists
Physical Therapy
Tai Chi
Yoga

Pretty piss-poor offerings, really. And that's the biggest motivation for the HHF. We all need to network because for a lot of services, there are only 1 or 2 practitioners. There is 1 yoga studio, 1 candle shop, 1 health food store, 3 acupuncturists (and 2 of them carry herbs), 0 nutrition consultants and 0 naturopathic physicians.

I'd love to bring in stuff from all over, but I think the group's purpose is to increase awareness about local options for holistic living (and they're charging for the booth space, so that could be an issue with a non-local company too). Part of me is surprised that in a city with a population of 100K+, there is so little diversity. Then again, I realize I'm in the Bible Belt and if it were a Christian Health Fair, we'd have people throwing money at us.

I think organic farms would be part of the list, if there were any local. I'd certainly eat a lot better if there were. Organic produce here is almost double what regular produce costs. No farmers markets in this town, either.
