Why I am a liberal

Been thinking about this freshly in response to the torture issue and the Sotomayer nomination and many other things. And, it made me think afresh about why I am liberal, having grown up in a conservative family. It's not a kneejerk reaction to Bush's presidency. Nor is it solely a product of me having gone to Harvard and then living in Madison,

my "why"?

Once I learned that the adults around me were not infallible, I started wondering what else I was taking for granted. Some things were kinda funny, and others really made (make) me wonder and others made (make) me mad. The more I researched, the more I learned, the more my mind opened up. I hope that I have raised my children's and other's awareness levels.

If and when I have kids, I'll try to raise them open-minded too. If they turn out to be an open-minded conservative, so be it, as long as it's open-minded.

I'm a liberal because I seem to have been born with some sort of inherent sense of justice and fairness. I can't understand why we as a country have so much money and there are homeless people and people without health care. I don't understand not having equal rights for all people or thinking that anyone ever deserves to die no matter how horrible and awful a person they might be. I think protecting the environment is important and people who so much as litter piss me off (you have a full car that you can put trash in do you really need to throw your cigarette butt out the window?) because its not like the world is a theme park where they sweep up all of the sidewalks every night after we go to sleep; we all have to do our share.
