Read a children's book. When I went out West with my family last summer, I took the 5th Harry Potter book and Roald Dahl's "The BFG."
They don't take a great deal of thought, but are still great reads because the authors aren't obsessed with the stupid notion of reality.
I still need to decide what to take with me as I head toward Williamsburg, the first stop on this year's family journey, this Saturday. I'm currently thinking "The Phantom Tollbooth." I need another.
two summers ago i read house of sand and fog on the beach. that was nice. although it made me a bit uncomfortable to be surrounded by family while i was reading the raunchy sex scenes. kinda weird. anyways... have you read the davinci code? i think you have.(interestingly, my aunt patty told me not to read it and if i did not to believe anything it said. i didn't know i also had a crazily-religious aunt patty. what a thing to have in common!) angels and demons is a book dan brown wrote before that with the same characters, my dad liked it. i haven't been reading much this summer but i'm gonna throw in a suggestion for angela's ashes cause its my fave. oh, and i like john's suggestion for children's books. those are always a good time. have fun at the beach!
